Talking and listening give Acorns Class its character. Nursery children build foundations in spoken language, making communication a practical focus for families choosing Stanley Road Primary School’s nursery in Worcester. The provision belongs to the school’s early years team, with a nursery teacher leading Acorns Class. Children can join in the term after their third birthday.
In February 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Early learning puts language, reading and mathematics first. Across the early years foundation stage (EYFS), learning follows an ordered sequence with defined goals: children develop their communication alongside the beginnings of literacy and number knowledge. For parents, this means the educational focus reaches beyond preparation for reading alone. Speaking and listening matter too.
Daily phonics teaching includes Nursery, using Letters and Sounds. Phase One is the nursery stage of that programme, with sounds forming the starting point for learning to read. Families are encouraged to share reading every day, giving them a concrete way to continue the emphasis on language at home.
The February 2026 early years findings describe generally clear teaching and children who pay attention. Progress is monitored closely, and gaps in learning generally become smaller. Children generally make good progress from their individual starting points, so the emphasis is on developing what each child already knows and can do.
Settling rests on relationships and familiar routines. In February 2026, early years children formed warm connections with adults, learnt the routines and adapted quickly. Children learning English as an additional language also developed English communication quickly, with good progress in language from differing starting points.
Extra adults support early years children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), disadvantaged children and children with other vulnerabilities. This helps them take part in learning with their peers. External partners also contribute expertise, while links with families help them access support.
Across the school, the SENCo coordinates SEND provision, works with parents and outside agencies, and arranges staff training. Speech and Language Therapy and the Autism Team are among the school’s partners. These give families relevant points of connection when communication or developmental needs require specialist involvement.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Worcestershire’s local authority school admissions route, meeting the normal deadline. Treat choosing Acorns and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
The previously published nursery timetable gives morning sessions as 8.45am to 11.45am and afternoon sessions as 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Confirm current session times with the school office before planning collection and other care.
Nursery enquiries go to the school office, where families ask to join the waiting list. Call 01905 355043. School visits can also be arranged by phoning the office for an appointment, giving parents an opportunity to see the setting before making their choice.
