Nursery at Seaton Academy

Books, familiar songs and learning to be a friend give Seaton Academy’s Nursery class its clearest character. Children can start after their third birthday, within the academy’s early years provision in High Seaton, Workington. This is a school nursery with a structured morning curriculum and options to extend the day.
The early years judgement was Requires improvement at Ofsted’s inspection on 5 and 6 December 2023. Enjoyment of stories and support for speaking sit alongside concerns about how consistently children build and retain their learning. Both matter when weighing up the provision.
Play provides the framework for learning. The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with planned, focused play alongside adults. For parents, that means play is used as a teaching activity, rather than simply filling the time between lessons. The school says it invests in substantial adult support to develop children’s learning opportunities.
In December 2023, Nursery children joined in familiar stories, rhymes and songs enthusiastically. Adults encouraged them to pay attention and express their thoughts. These activities give children practice in listening and speaking while building their interest in books.
Teaching across early years learning areas was uneven at that point. Staff had received suitable training and support in some areas, but children were not remembering everything they needed to learn. Checks on learning also failed to uncover gaps sufficiently well. The practical question for families is how activities build on earlier learning, and how staff recognise when a child needs another explanation or more practice.
Friendship starts in Nursery: in December 2023, children were learning to treat others considerately from the beginning of their time there. This gives social learning a place alongside language and play.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), support involves the class teacher and SENCO, with parents taking part in decisions. Families of children on the SEND register are invited to review support each term. The school uses a repeating assess, plan, do and review cycle, allowing adjustments to change as a child’s needs develop. Contact the SEND team at SEND@seatonacademy.co.uk.
A school facility, the Rainbow room, provides a quiet space with sensory resources for children who need it. Physical accessibility still needs development, including within plans for the Nursery building, so families with mobility needs should consider the existing access arrangements carefully.
Nursery children may stay for lunch. Food is cooked in the school’s own kitchen each day, children have a daily choice, and special diets are accommodated. Packed lunches are not permitted. Lunch carries a charge, payable through ParentPay; ask the school for current charges.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must submit a separate application through the local authority’s normal admissions process by its specified deadline; the academy does not submit it for them.
For September 2027 entry and ongoing, Nursery attendance gives priority as the second oversubscription criterion. It follows the first priority group, while children whose EHCP names the school are admitted before other places are allocated. This priority is an advantage in allocation, not an automatic transfer. The September 2026 arrangements did not include Nursery attendance among their priority criteria.
Transition support is a separate matter. Before a September school start, children who had applied were offered school visits and a settling afternoon, helping early years staff begin getting to know them. SEND transition planning also includes sharing information and liaison between staff and relevant professionals.
Morning sessions run from 9am to noon; afternoons run from 1pm to 3pm, with lunch between noon and 1pm. The standard funded offer is 15 hours across five mornings for 38 weeks. Eligible childcare codes for 15 or 30 hours are accepted from the term after a child turns three; an eligible 15-hour code can also allow provision from the third birthday.
Five weekday mornings are expected for the structured curriculum. An attendance option also runs from a minimum of three mornings (nine hours) to a maximum of five full days (30 hours), with one week’s notice required. Agree the attendance pattern when arranging care. Additional care can be charged, including extensions for families using 15-hour codes.
Nursery applications go to the main office with evidence of birth date and home address. Enquiries can go to admin@seatonacademy.co.uk or 01900 66982. Uniform includes purple knitwear, a white or purple polo shirt and grey bottoms; branded items are optional. Nursery children do not need PE kit, and preloved uniform is available through the office.
Children can start after their third birthday. With an eligible 15-hour code, provision can begin from the birthday itself; termly intakes also operate.
Mornings run from 9am to noon and afternoons from 1pm to 3pm. Lunch occupies noon to 1pm.
No. A separate local authority application is required. For September 2027 entry and ongoing, Nursery attendance is the second oversubscription criterion, but it does not guarantee admission.
