Play is the starting point here: Sir Edmund Hillary Academy describes its nursery as a place where children develop independence, creativity and curiosity through play. The provision includes Nursery for two-year-olds and Foundation 1, with funded and paid places advertised from age three. It is part of the school on Kingsway in Kilton, Worksop, giving families a school-based early years option.
Learning through play shapes the nursery’s approach. The academy aims for children to become curious, creative and independent through their play experiences. For parents, this places play at the centre of how the nursery intends children to learn.
Settling starts with parents alongside their children. Families are encouraged to stay for several initial nursery sessions, allowing staff to get to know both the child and the adults who care for them. That makes the first sessions an opportunity to discuss individual needs while the child becomes familiar with nursery.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), support follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle. Early years staff monitor progress using Early Years Benchmarking; concerns are discussed with parents, and specialist advice may be sought from Inclusion Services or a Speech and Language Therapist. Parents therefore have a role in identifying needs and shaping the next steps.
Practical support includes NELI in EYFS, visual timetables and boards showing what happens now and next. Accessible toilets are located in EYFS, and support with changing forms part of the school’s provision. Resources and interventions are selected according to the child: the school makes clear that each approach will not suit everyone. SEND Support Plans are reviewed termly, with parents invited to at least two face-to-face reviews and one written review each academic year.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer admissions priority. Children do not transfer automatically: families must make a separate application through Nottinghamshire County Council’s normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their child’s intake. The September 2026 intake had a closing date of 15 January 2026.
Preparation for the change is a separate matter. Parent evenings precede entry to Foundation 1 and Reception, providing time for questions. Transition Days usually take place in the first week of July, and taster visits are welcomed. For children with SEND, the number and length of short EYFS visits can be adjusted to individual needs, helping families prepare at a suitable pace.
Part-time morning and afternoon places are allocated from a chronological waiting list. Foundation 1 includes 15- and 30-hour entitlement places. Funded and paid nursery places are offered from age three; families should ask the school for current charges.
Nursery applications go directly to the school office, using a completed application form.
