Magnifiers, construction and counting give Worksop Priory’s early years provision a practical character. This is the school’s own nursery, known as Foundation 1, on Holles Street in Worksop. Children can join in the term following their third birthday, with flexible hours and a 30-hour wrap-around option.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 18 and 19 March 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. In March 2025, activities encouraged children to investigate and take an interest in learning, while relationships helped them become more confident and independent.
Learning starts with getting to know each child. The staff team assesses children against the early learning goals, then creates individual plans. The practical implication is a starting point based on the child’s development, rather than simply their age.
Making and investigating sit alongside early number work. In March 2025, early years children used magnifiers for exploration, made art and constructions, and handled equipment to count objects. These activities give children concrete things to examine, make and work with. The nursery has access to an outdoor area, reached through the side gate.
Early reading has a named approach: Success For All Phonics. Daily phonics begins in Foundation 1, introducing the sounds used in reading. Early years children also take home listening books each week for an adult to share, so enjoying stories has a place alongside practising reading skills.
Christian life is part of the setting’s character. The youngest children regularly attend Wiggly Worship at Priory Church. This gives families a specific picture of how the academy’s Church of England identity reaches its youngest pupils.
Getting familiar with adults begins before nursery starts. Families are invited to events and workshops with their children, giving them opportunities to meet staff together. In March 2025, early years children were developing independence through supportive relationships and showed consideration towards others.
For children needing additional support, the school’s provision can include work on speech and language, emotional support and individual planning. Staff involve families and seek help from outside agencies. These are school-wide arrangements through which parents can discuss their child’s needs.
School meal arrangements allow a choice between sandwiches and a school dinner. Meals have two courses, and the menu changes on a three-week rotation. ParentPay handles meal payments; families should refer to the school for current charges.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority using the Common Application form, meeting the deadline for the relevant admissions round. Nottinghamshire residents apply through Nottinghamshire County Council. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
In March 2025, early years children were ready for the next step in their education. Their growing confidence and independence matter for that move, but educational preparation does not secure admission.
The part-time morning runs from 8:30am to 11:30am. Drop-off is through the side gate to nursery staff, with collection at the nursery side gate. Flexible hours and the 30-hour provision offer other ways to organise attendance.
The funded 30-hour option depends on eligibility. Families apply through Gov.uk, take their eligibility code, National Insurance number and child’s birth certificate to the office, and reconfirm eligibility every three months.
