Forest School, cooking and trips to Lancing College Farm give Explorers’ Corner a character of its own. This is the nursery and pre-school provision for children aged 2 to 4 at Lancing College Preparatory School at Worthing, with play and exploration shaping the learning.
Children move from Nursery to Pre-School in the term following their third birthday. That change also brings a higher minimum attendance commitment, so families need to plan both stages rather than just the first booking.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the learning framework. Here, that means activities which develop children’s language, curiosity and physical skills through play, with adults supporting some experiences and children initiating others. In May 2025, ISI found that early-years planning responded to children’s interests and developmental needs. Learning has a practical emphasis.
Weekly enrichment includes music, a modern foreign language and PE or gym. Cooking and Forest School or outdoor activities take place regularly, while STEM and art sessions across the term involve the heads of science and art. These give children different ways to experiment, move and express themselves alongside their everyday play.
The forest school provides space to investigate nature. Beyond school, outings include the local library, shopping for snack or baking ingredients, and Lancing College Farm. Visiting professionals include doctors, firefighters and dental hygienists, bringing familiar working roles into children’s learning.
In May 2025, early-years children developed conversation, concentration and cooperation through imaginative play, including ferry journeys and a royal wedding. Such play gives turn-taking and language a purpose children can understand.
Relationships with adults support settling. The May 2025 early-years findings described children settling promptly, playing confidently and responding positively to encouragement. Staff model courtesy and help children practise listening, sharing and playing together, making social development part of daily activity.
Additional needs are identified promptly on joining, including in the early years. Staff receive strategies through individual profiles and regular discussion, and children’s progress is monitored so extra help can follow. Eligible children can also receive support through the Disability Access Fund; its use is decided through assessment of the child’s needs and consultation with parents.
Morning and full-day sessions include lunch and snacks. For funded attendance, meals and enrichment carry additional contributions. Parents should obtain current charges from the school when planning their booking.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery and Reception admissions are separate: families should apply again through the normal Reception admissions process by its deadline. Choose the nursery for the experience it offers now, and treat the next school place as a separate decision.
Mornings run from 08:30 to 13:00; full days finish at 15:30 after the same start. Nursery requires at least 3 sessions weekly, equivalent to 1.5 days or a mixture of mornings and full days. Pre-School requires at least 4 sessions, equivalent to 2 full days or a mixture of mornings and full days. Extra sessions depend on availability.
Funding needs careful budgeting. Universal funding for children aged 3 and 4 covers up to 15 hours weekly, subject to government and local authority conditions. It applies only during school opening weeks, usually 33 per year rather than the local authority’s full 38. Extended funding for 3-4 year olds is not offered.
Funded-only afternoon places run daily from 12:30 to 15:30, with no minimum weekly booking, no deposit or registration fee, and a 4 week notice period. Nursery and Pre-School wraparound is term-time only and charged separately. For enquiries, call 01903 201123 or email LPWadmissions@lancing.org.uk.
