Early number work and language development give Wynyard’s nursery a clear learning focus. Children encounter calculation, phonics, reading and writing alongside activities intended to develop perseverance and problem solving. This is the nursery within Wynyard Church of England Primary School on Redwood Drive, rather than a separate childcare setting.
The school describes its Christian ethos as inclusive and welcomes families with other faiths or none. For parents, that means choosing early education within a school that asks families to respect its religious character.
Learning combines early academic foundations with the ability to keep trying. Nursery experiences support children’s first steps with numbers and written language, while resilience and problem solving are also part of the approach. The emphasis reaches beyond completing an activity: children are encouraged to develop the habits that help them tackle their next challenge.
The Ofsted inspection on 24 and 25 January 2024 highlighted adults’ knowledge of child development and their work to build language skills across the early years. Children also enjoyed learning and kept their attention on their play. These are findings about the school’s early years provision, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Carefully organised activities supported children’s development. The useful connection for parents is between play and adult involvement: children could concentrate on their interests, with adults extending the language they used. Early calculation, reading and writing sit alongside that developmental focus, giving the nursery day both learning content and attention to how young children learn.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the school’s support structure brings together the class teacher and SEND coordinator. Parents raise initial concerns with their child’s teacher; the coordinator is a further contact if concerns continue. Support can include work on speech and language, movement skills or emotional wellbeing, delivered individually or in groups according to need.
Speech and Language Therapy and Educational Psychology are among the specialist services the school can involve. Parents may be asked to give permission for a specialist referral, and recommendations help shape support in school. Parents also participate in reviewing support plans, giving home experience a place in decisions about their child’s learning.
Physical access includes double doors, a lift between the school’s two levels and two accessible toilets. Early years lunchtime is scheduled from 11.30am to 12.30pm.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no attendance-based priority for September 2027 entry. Families must make a separate application using their home local authority’s common application form, returning it by 15 January for that September intake. Nursery attendance does not replace this step.
For children with SEND changing classes, information goes to the next teacher in advance, including targets and professional advice. A planning meeting usually accompanies the handover, and a book explaining the change can be made where helpful. This supports continuity of care; it is separate from the allocation of a Reception place.
The school office can arrange a school visit. Enquiries can be made by telephone on 01740 555005 or by email at admin@wynyardprimary.org.uk. The school is on Redwood Drive, Wynyard, TS22 5UB.
