Story time becomes a starting point for children's own stories at Birchfield. Language and number develop from pre-school onwards, with communication a clear strength in the early years findings from May 2024. This gives the provision a character built around talking, listening and beginning to express ideas.
Birchfield's pre-school accepts children from age two and operates on the school site in Yeovil. Its groups include Squirrels for rising twos and threes, and Foxes & Hedgehogs for rising fours. Across the preschools, there are over 100 children on roll; that is an attendance figure, rather than a capacity. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 21 and 22 May 2024.
Stories have a practical purpose here. In May 2024, children enjoyed listening to stories and drew on newly acquired language when beginning to write their own. Adults helped develop their communication, while learning about numbers started in pre-school. For parents, these are concrete examples of how early learning connects listening with expression and builds familiarity with number.
Children were absorbed in activities and approached learning positively. Learning to share, wait for a turn and listen to others also began in the early years. These social habits matter alongside language: they help children participate in activities with other children.
The Early Years Foundation Stage approach includes exploration, sustained effort and developing ideas. In parent language, this means trying things out, concentrating when something proves difficult, and thinking of ways to tackle a task. The emphasis reaches beyond completing an activity to how a child approaches it, makes connections and responds to a challenge.
Pre-school staffing includes manager and assistant roles, alongside an apprentice assistant role. For children needing additional educational support, the school's process involves assessment and monitoring, with parents consulted before identification. Individual learning plans specify support and targets, and families receive reviews at least termly. That gives parents a recurring opportunity to discuss their child's needs and progress.
Support needs. The May 2024 findings also raised school-wide concerns about adaptations in some foundation subjects and the precision of help for children beginning to read. These were school improvement priorities, rather than separate nursery judgements. Families should weigh them alongside the positive findings about communication in the early years.
Attending Birchfield's nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing the pre-school should therefore be a decision about the child's nursery experience, with the later school application treated as a separate step.
Applications for pre-school places use an online application form. The school office is the contact point for enquiries: email office@birchfieldprimaryschool.co.uk or telephone 01935 427609. The provision is on Birchfield Road, Yeovil, BA21 5RL.
