Messy play, outdoor activity and a lunchtime kitchen connection give Little Learners its own preschool rhythm within Primrose Lane Primary School in Yeovil. Children aged 2 to 4 attend this school nursery, which has 26 places. Up to 6 places in a session can go to two-year-olds, depending on the children attending and staffing ratios.
The youngest children can start from the half term following their second birthday, subject to the preschool manager’s discretion. This is a term-time setting: families need a separate plan for school holidays.
Free play starts the morning, followed by circle time at 9.15, when children greet one another and discuss the weather and day ahead. Adult-guided learning alternates with outdoor play and children’s own choices. Sound and letter work and number activities sit alongside these play opportunities, rather than occupying the whole session.
At 11.40, stories, songs and sharing bring the morning group together; lunch follows at noon. Afternoon children have their own circle time, activities and snack, with another story and singing slot at 15.40. The timetable can change to accommodate children’s interests, walks or PE. There is structure, with room to respond to the group.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together movement, language and relationships with early maths, literacy, creative work and exploring the world. Staff plan adult-guided and child-chosen activities around each child’s next steps. Sensory materials and messy exploration are part of learning, so practical play clothes matter.
In May 2025, Ofsted found that preschool children enjoyed activities developing skills for later learning, with early-years routines, resources and activities planned to prepare them for what followed.
Settling starts with two hour-long sessions. A parent can remain for one; the child attends the other independently, with flexibility if separation proves difficult. Each key person supports a small group, combining emotional reassurance with learning plans and help with nappies and toileting. Parents have a familiar contact for concerns.
A Learning Journey booklet goes home each term, and parents are invited to development meetings twice a year. For children aged between two and three, a written EYFS progress check identifies strengths and areas needing attention. Additional needs can be discussed before starting with the Early Years SENCO. Individually planned help can include small-group work and individual time; Little Learners also has its own accessible toilet.
Lunch can be a packed meal with an ice pack or an optional hot meal from the onsite kitchen, including a vegetarian choice. The site excludes nuts. Snacks and drinks are included in session charges, while breakfast and school lunch cost extra. Staff training includes first aid, child protection, sign language and food hygiene, supporting the practical demands of the day.
A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Primrose Lane Primary School’s Reception, and nursery attendance gives no Reception priority. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. For Somerset families, online and paper routes are available; the September 2027 entry deadline is 23:59 on 15 January 2027. Children with an EHCP follow the placement process through the SEND team instead.
Transition support is a separate matter. Preschool staff work with the receiving Reception team and pass on agreed records to the child’s chosen or allocated school. That helps the next team understand the child, wherever their place is allocated.
Choose an All Day session from 08:00 to 16:00, Morning from 08:00 to 13:00, or Afternoon from 13:00 to 16:00. Bookings cover complete sessions, with a minimum of two sessions weekly; All Day counts as two. A shorter attendance period still uses the full booked session for funding or charges. Bank holidays and INSET days are closures.
Universal funding provides up to 15 hours weekly for three- and four-year-olds from the term after their third birthday. Eligible working families can access 30 hours weekly from the start of the term after their child is deemed eligible, and eligible two-year-olds receiving extra support can access 15 hours. Funded hours are deducted from invoices; uncovered hours are charged. Working-parent eligibility needs reconfirming every three months. Ask the school for current charges.
Book a viewing through the school office on 01935 475693 or office@plps.yacat.org. Bring named spare clothes, weather-appropriate clothing, nappies and wipes if needed, sun cream and a water bottle. Notify staff about another collector and share the collection password; early or late collection goes through school reception.
