A purpose-built setting with a shared garden: Ashford Play Nursery pairs a more school-like indoor environment with outdoor space shared with its neighbour. This is the Wall Road setting in Ashford, with capacity for 44 children aged 24 to 60 months.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its inspection on 27 November 2023. Language, independence and learning through practical activities were prominent in November 2023: children joined in rhymes, experimented with building towers and chose resources for imaginative play. These are useful foundations for children learning to express themselves and take part alongside others. The improvement priority was more prompt recognition of children needing help to participate during routines.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, its everyday meaning can be seen in the November 2023 activities: counting construction bricks brought mathematics into play, while stories and rhymes gave children opportunities to listen, speak and share ideas.
In November 2023, adults encouraged children to think through how to build taller towers. Younger children explored colours. The combination gave children different ways into the same activity, with practical problems to solve and language to use as they worked.
Play dough offered another kind of challenge. Children made models and persisted with cutters to produce shapes in November 2023. Imaginative play also sustained attention: younger children selected items for a pretend picnic with dolls. These examples matter because they show learning taking place through things children could handle, choose and change, rather than through instructions alone.
The Wall Road building was purpose-built and shares the rear garden of the nursery at 43 Albert Road. Its indoor setting has a more formal, school-like character. For families, that combination brings a defined indoor base alongside access to outdoor space shared with the neighbouring nursery.
In November 2023, children walked to the neighbouring setting's garden, with staff managing their safety on the journey. The garden therefore formed part of the children's experience beyond the Wall Road building itself.
Crumpet, the nursery bear, provided a connection between nursery and family life in November 2023. Children took him home and talked about his adventures afterwards. That gives a child something concrete to discuss with adults and friends, linking experiences outside nursery with conversation back in the setting.
At the November 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and judged support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities positively, including progress in communication. These are dated findings, with practical examples behind them rather than a general promise about care.
In November 2023, a key-person arrangement supported regular exchanges with parents about children's development and what to work on next. Younger children received physical comfort from adults who knew them. Stories, shared play and conversation were part of relationships as well as learning, giving children several ways to engage with a familiar adult.
Independence was practised in small, manageable steps in November 2023. Children fetched drinking water from water stations and tidied their belongings. They also invited friends to play and helped one another choose clothes for dressing up. Those examples show opportunities to make choices and contribute to nursery life.
The limitation was responsiveness during routines. In November 2023, staff sometimes took too long to notice that a child had stopped participating fully, affecting that child's interest and behaviour. This sits alongside the positive care findings and matters for families whose children need extra prompting to join an activity.
The nursery is at 3 Wall Road, Ashford, TN24 8NZ. Opening hours are 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas. These hours give families a clear outer boundary for planning work and care.
For direct enquiries, the Wall Road telephone number is 01233 638960; email enquiries go to email@ashfordplaynursery.co.uk. Use the Wall Road contact when discussing this setting, which shares facilities with the Albert Road nursery.
In November 2023, the nursery received early-education funding for children aged two, three and four. That describes participation at that date, rather than a promise of a particular funded booking now. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Ashford Play Nursery suits families seeking a purpose-built setting for children aged 24 to 60 months, with a more school-like indoor character and access to a shared garden. Its November 2023 examples give the clearest sense of the day: construction, stories, imaginative play and Crumpet's trips home linked practical learning with conversation. The decision point is how reliably staff now help children stay involved during routines, alongside whether the attendance arrangement fits family life.
