An upstairs baby room, ground-floor spaces for older children and an Astroturf outdoor area give Goldilocks Nursery, Ashford a clear physical shape. Its Hollington Place setting has capacity for 58 children, with ages running from three months to five years. The separation between age groups matters: babies have their own base rather than sharing the main toddler and preschool spaces.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its 13 March 2024 inspection. Practical learning was a strength of that visit, with cooking, experiments and everyday independence featuring in the children's activities. There were also two clear improvement priorities: making outdoor learning more engaging and helping staff judge when to intervene in children's play. Those points deserve weight alongside the grade.
The baby room occupies the first floor and caters for children from three months to two years; in March 2024, babies had room to practise movement and access to an outdoor space of their own.
On the ground floor, the toddler area serves children aged two to three; in March 2024, activities included using paint and crayons and learning to cut paper. These are small, manageable steps towards controlling tools and expressing ideas.
The pre-school department, also downstairs, caters for ages three to five and supports preparation for school, with resources including a table top tablet. In March 2024, cooking and experiments prompted children to talk about changes and try unfamiliar words. The emphasis was on doing something and discussing it, rather than simply hearing an explanation.
The early years foundation stage is the statutory framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the March 2024 activities illustrate what that means in practice: movement for babies, creative exploration for toddlers, and stories, conversation and practical investigations for older children.
During that month, staff encouraged children to attempt everyday tasks themselves. Coats and drinks became opportunities to practise independence. Older children also learnt to listen and take turns through the examples adults gave during conversation and play. These ordinary moments are useful preparation for participating in a group.
There was room for both independent play and activities in smaller groups indoors. However, some children became distracted and unsettled while playing independently in March 2024. The improvement priority was therefore about the timing of adult involvement: recognising when a child needed help to stay interested or take an idea further.
Astroturf provides an outdoor surface intended for use after wet weather. That is a useful physical resource, but the quality of what happens outside matters too. In March 2024, children across the age groups went outdoors, yet their engagement there was weaker than indoors. Developing outdoor activities for children who learn best outside was a specific priority.
Diwali and St Patrick's day were among the celebrations explored in March 2024, helping children encounter different ways families mark occasions. Local outings included shopping for produce at the market and visits to the town centre. Staff used the walks to discuss road safety, connecting learning with the streets children actually used.
In March 2024, singing helped comfort babies and build their relationships with adults. That gives a concrete picture of emotional care: familiar interaction accompanied the opportunities to move and explore. For older children, adults modelled conversation and listening during play, so social expectations were taught through everyday exchanges.
Communication with families included an app in March 2024. Parents could receive updates and contribute information themselves, giving families a two-way channel for sharing information about their child. Families were also invited into the nursery at designated times to share children's learning. These arrangements connected experiences at nursery with what parents knew about their child at home.
At the March 2024 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and judged that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities received good support, with the special educational needs coordinator using advice from outside professionals to help children and their families.
Current premises arrangements include controlled access and CCTV. These are practical security measures; the dated safeguarding judgement remains the relevant assessment of effectiveness.
Meals and snacks are made on site by the nursery's cook. Having food prepared within the setting makes the kitchen arrangements part of the daily care offer.
The address is Hollington Place, Ashford, TN24 8UN. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas. The opening window is useful for planning work and family routines, while the holiday closures need to fit the household's backup care arrangements.
Enquiries can be made by telephone on 01233 610 900. The nursery accepts children from three months to five years, covering the progression from baby care through to preparation for school within the same setting.
In March 2024, the nursery received funding for early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated participation fact, rather than a promise of eligibility or a particular funded booking today. Families should obtain a current written quotation for their proposed attendance.
Goldilocks suits families seeking care from babyhood through the preschool years, with separate age-group spaces and meals prepared on site. The March 2024 picture included practical investigations, conversation and everyday independence, alongside clear weaknesses in outdoor engagement and the timing of adult support during play. Its weekday opening window and holiday closures also make the family's calendar an essential part of the decision.
Ofsted rated it Good at the inspection on 13 March 2024. Improvement priorities concerned outdoor learning and when staff should interact to extend children's play.
