Serendipity Nursery

At a Glance

A sloping garden and an emphasis on independence give Serendipity Nursery's August 2023 account its character: children tended plants, chose their play and helped serve lunch. At its 31 August 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective.

Based at The Kaleidoscope Children's Centre in Vange, Basildon, the nursery has 50 places in total for children aged 0 to 60 months. That is whole-setting capacity, rather than the size of an individual group.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. In everyday terms, it connects play and exploration with developing communication, physical skills and independence.

In August 2023, babies had toys suited to their stage of development, while staff helped them move safely around their room and encouraged early words. Older children encountered questions intended to develop their thinking, although adults sometimes moved on before children had time to answer.

The garden added physical variety in August 2023. Children negotiated slopes, climbed and balanced on play equipment, and helped care for planted areas. These activities brought movement and practical responsibility into the same space. Planning also drew on children's existing knowledge and experiences; a new curriculum was being introduced at that time.

Care and Support

In August 2023, key persons exchanged information with families and helped children identify their own photograph and name. Babies received comforting cuddles when needed. Children also practised independence through clearing away and serving food, making ordinary routines part of their learning.

At the August 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that cooperation with other agencies supported children with special educational needs and/or disabilities and children learning English as an additional language, with additional funding used effectively for resources including outdoor equipment.

Staff supervision and coaching were part of the August 2023 arrangements, alongside access to online training. The remaining development need concerned how staff translated curriculum content into learning experiences.

Practical Information

The address is The Kaleidoscope Children's Centre, 27 Riverview Court, Vange, Basildon, SS16 4NF. Opening hours are 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures on bank holidays and for one week at Christmas.

In August 2023, funded early education was provided for two-, three- and four-year-olds. That describes participation at the inspection date.

Things to Consider

  • Time to answer. In August 2023, adults sometimes interrupted children's opportunities to express ideas by moving too quickly through questions. Allowing thinking time was an improvement priority.
  • Curriculum delivery. The August 2023 improvement priorities included deepening staff understanding of how to teach curriculum content. This matters alongside the curriculum change taking place then.
  • Your attendance plan. The opening window runs from 7am to 7pm. At a visit, ask which booking pattern and current funding arrangements would fit your child's attendance.

The Verdict

Serendipity suits families seeking care across the working week, with an opening window extending into the evening. Its August 2023 strengths centred on practical independence, garden activity and familiar key persons. The Good judgement provides a dated quality assessment; staff questioning and curriculum delivery remain the specific improvement points from that assessment.
