Nursery at Ryedene Primary and Nursery School

Two three-hour sessions give Ryedene’s nursery its practical shape: a morning beginning at 8:30 and an afternoon beginning at 12:15. This is nursery provision within Ryedene Primary and Nursery School, off Clover Way in Basildon, rather than a separate childcare setting.
In the 2025–2026 school year, the nursery classes were Little Acorns for three-year-olds and Mighty Oaks for four-year-olds. Those names gave the youngest children their own identity within the larger school. Ryedene’s stated aims include helping children become more independent while also learning to work together, a useful balance for families considering their child’s first experience of school.
The morning runs until 11:30; the afternoon finishes at 3:15. Each gives families a defined block of nursery time, with separate start and finish points to fit into the household day.
Across the early years foundation stage (EYFS), Ryedene aims to develop children’s speaking and listening so they can share ideas confidently. Its English aims also include introducing language-rich texts and encouraging an interest in reading. For parents, the emphasis is on communication as well as early literacy: finding words for an idea matters alongside becoming interested in books.
Learning at home has some named starting points too. EYFS family resources include Numberblocks for maths and Tiny Happy People for speech and language. These give parents specific resources to explore alongside their child, rather than an open-ended request to do more learning at home.
Support sits within a wider school structure that includes an Inclusion Leader/SENCo, an inclusion team and a speech and language therapy assistant. These are distinct roles, giving families identifiable routes for discussing learning or communication concerns.
Ryedene uses a graduated response to SEND: support can involve different teaching or additional help, with specialist input brought in where necessary. Identification can begin with a parent’s concern, information from an earlier setting or the school’s own observations. Decisions are intended to involve the people who know the child. That makes the parent’s contribution part of the process, rather than something to raise only after a difficulty has escalated.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer priority under Ryedene’s oversubscription criteria. Families must make a separate Reception application through Essex County Council’s admissions service, following the normal application deadline.
The priority order considers looked-after and previously looked-after children, siblings, the admission area and qualifying staff children before remaining applicants. Where applicants fall within the same category, proximity is decided using straight-line distance. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about nursery provision; the Reception application remains a separate practical task.
Session timing. Nursery hours are 8:30–11:30 and 12:15–3:15. Keep those nursery times in mind when planning collection and other family commitments.
For enquiries, contact the school office on 01268 559291 or email admin@ryedene.essex.sch.uk. School visits can be arranged with the office at a mutually convenient time, including during or after school hours.
Payments across the school use School Money, with card payments also possible through the office. This gives families an administrative route for school purchases without needing cash.
