In May 2025, growing vegetables and learning to serve a meal gave Luans Little People Day Nursery a practical character. Based at Bassetlaw District General Hospital in Worksop, it has capacity for 56 children from birth to five years. At its May 2025 inspection, Ofsted judged it Good overall and found safeguarding effective.
At that inspection, the strongest examples connected play with useful skills: handling tools, exploring books and managing everyday tasks. The balance matters, though. Adult involvement in child-led play and opportunities to develop language were both areas requiring improvement.
In May 2025, older children visited an allotment to plant vegetables, while the nursery garden offered another place to grow food and flowers. Children could talk about their raspberries, carrots and onions. Growing something tangible gave them a connection between food and the work involved in producing it.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the May 2025 examples included play that exercised small hand movements: squeezing pipettes to move coloured water and making painted footprints with toy dinosaurs. These activities brought physical practice into children's interests rather than treating it as a separate task.
Books also drew younger children's attention. Adults read with them and invited them to identify pictures. However, staff sometimes missed chances to extend children's chosen activities, leaving further learning unexplored.
At the May 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities were supported well, with professional collaboration helping staff identify individual needs and monitor development. Stories linking colours with emotions gave children a way to talk about feelings.
In May 2025, everyday independence included younger children cutting bananas safely and older children managing shoes and serving meals. Staff helped unsettled children engage with toys, while behaviour reminders covered sharing, listening and treating others kindly.
Parents were involved in bonnet-making at Easter and received guidance on weaning and dental care. That linked nursery experiences with practical care at home.
The address is Bassetlaw District General Hospital, Kilton Hill, Worksop, S81 0BD. In May 2025, opening hours ran from 7.30am until 6pm on weekdays, throughout the year; funded early education was provided for children from nine months onwards.
Luans Little People suits families who value practical independence, gardening and play rooted in children's interests. Its May 2025 examples give that character substance, from planting vegetables to handling utensils. The Good judgement sits alongside clear work to do on language and adult interaction, making those everyday teaching habits central to the decision.
