Sweet Peas Pre-School

At a Glance

Child-led play, free access to outdoor space and language sessions give Sweet Peas Pre-School its character. Based at Wootton Village Memorial Hall on Bedford Road, it combines a community setting with practical choices about how much of the day children attend. There is capacity for 30 children in total.

Ofsted rated the setting Good at its 11 May 2021 inspection. That is a dated judgement, rather than an assessment of today's provision. The current offer includes Lift off to Language, sessions supporting children's communication, alongside daily opportunities for physical, social and creative learning.

Morning, afternoon and full-day bookings operate during term time, with Breakfast Club offering an earlier start. The setting welcomes children aged two to four and is a charity managed by parents, carers and local volunteers. That community involvement is part of its organisation, not simply a description of its atmosphere.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The EYFS guides learning through play and interaction, covering children's communication, physical development and social development as well as early literacy, mathematics, creative work and understanding their surroundings. Sweet Peas uses child-led activities and planning that responds to what children are doing. This makes their interests a starting point for the day.

Lift off to Language adds a named strand of communication work. Its sessions encourage children to communicate and develop relationships, while staff listen to their individual voices. For parents, the useful distinction is that language has an explicit place in the programme, alongside everyday conversation.

Role play, group games and ring games support personal, social and emotional learning. Tuff trays provide another format for activities across the learning areas. These are concrete ways for children to take part, rather than a day built solely around adult instruction.

Weekly cookery club sessions are a further option, with a separate charge and an email opt-out. Children whose families opt out do not take part. That participation condition matters when weighing the programme against the overall cost of attendance.

Outdoor and Community Life

Children have free access to outdoor space, with daily activities and opportunities to practise movement through obstacles and risky play. The emphasis includes both larger movements and finer physical skills. Outdoor activity therefore has a place in the ordinary day, rather than depending entirely on a special outing.

Community participation also shapes governance: a committee drawn from parents, carers and the wider community is elected at an annual general meeting. Families have a formal route into how the charity is managed.

Care and Support

Relationships with children and families are an explicit part of the approach. Activities encourage children to express feelings and develop empathy, while weekly newsletters share recent experiences and diary information. These give parents a recurring account of preschool life beyond the session timetable.

The staff structure includes a manager with a SENDCO role, a safeguarding lead and paediatric first aiders. Those are identifiable responsibilities within the team; they should not be confused with an inspection judgement about the effectiveness of support.

Operation Encompass is the police and education safeguarding partnership through which the preschool receives information about police-attended domestic abuse incidents involving its children before the next school day. The arrangement gives the safeguarding team information relevant to a child's care. Families are introduced to the partnership when their child joins, and its information is handled confidentially.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Sweet Peas runs for 38 weeks a year, closing during school holidays and on bank holidays. Its minimum booking is two sessions on separate days each week. Morning sessions run from 9am to noon; the afternoon timetable gives 12.45pm to 3.45pm, although a different finish appears in the fee table.

Full Day runs from 9am to 3.45pm. Full Day & Breakfast Club starts at 8.15am and finishes at 3.45pm; Breakfast Club itself runs from 8.15am to 9am, and Lunch Club from noon to 12.45pm. The building also closes when used as a polling station, with advance notice.

A waiting-list application requires the 10.3 application form, and joining that list does not guarantee a place. Four weeks' notice is required to change sessions or withdraw, including for families using funded hours. Confirmed sessions remain payable during illness or holidays.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funding includes both two-year-old options, universal funding for three- and four-year-olds and extended funding for eligible working families. Funded attendance is term-time, and funding can be used across the sessions except Breakfast Club. Additional private sessions are charged separately. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; the fees and funding page explains the charge structure.

Breakfast is included with Breakfast Club; optional hot lunches cost extra, or children can bring a packed lunch, while snacks are separately charged unless families opt out by email and supply a suitable snack. These lunch and snack arrangements also apply alongside funded attendance.

Parents supply nappies and wipes, and apply or supply sun cream when needed; charges apply if these are missing. Cookery club has its own opt-out charge. Food and non-food items therefore need separate consideration from funded childcare hours.

Things to Consider

  • Later complaint record. Ofsted's records list a complaint dated 26 March 2026; its outcome is not published, so families may want to ask the preschool about it.
  • Afternoon collection. The session timetable and footer give a 3.45pm finish, while the fee table gives 3.35pm. Confirm the agreed collection time before choosing an afternoon booking.
  • Weekly commitment. The minimum is two sessions across separate days, and attendance is term-time only. At a visit, discuss how that pattern would fit your child and the family week.
  • Charges and participation. Snacks and cookery club use email opt-outs, with different consequences: families supply replacement snacks, while children opting out of cookery do not participate. Consider both the cost and the child's daily experience.

The Verdict

Sweet Peas suits families seeking morning or afternoon preschool sessions as well as those combining a full day with breakfast. Child-led learning, outdoor access and Lift off to Language give the offer a clear shape, while community governance adds a practical connection for parents. Term-time closures, the minimum weekly commitment and separate extras are central to the decision. The later complaint record also deserves a direct conversation.
