Independence here has a practical starting point: learning to carry a plate, put on shoes and manage a coat. In September 2024, these everyday tasks formed part of life at Ladybird Montessori Sutton, alongside songs in different languages and space for babies to develop their movement. The emphasis gives parents a concrete picture of the Montessori approach: children taking an active part in their own day.
At its September 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and praised the progression of learning through its curriculum. There were also two clear priorities: staff needed to make activities more purposeful for individual children and use conversations more effectively to develop language.
This is the Sutton Coldfield setting at 321 Birmingham Road, Wylde Green, B72 1EH, accepting children aged 3 to 60 months. Its practical appeal includes opening hours from 7am to 6pm on weekdays, with care across the year apart from bank holidays.
Montessori is an approach centred on children's independence and practical, hands-on learning. In September 2024, it formed part of this nursery's curriculum, with activities chosen by adults as well as those initiated by children. The early years foundation stage supplies the required framework for learning, development and care: the child's day brings together play, communication, movement and growing independence.
The September 2024 examples were tangible. Children helped with serving food, while older children practised dressing themselves. For a parent who values independence, this matters more than a broad promise about preparation for school: ordinary routines gave children opportunities to do things for themselves.
Songs also crossed language boundaries. In September 2024, children heard rhymes in English, Italian and Spanish; younger children attempted the accompanying movements, and some older children contributed words in other languages. Music provided an accessible way to join in, including for children still developing spoken language.
That did not mean every interaction made the most of its learning potential. In September 2024, some practitioners needed to connect their support more closely to the intended learning. Language opportunities were sometimes lost through questions that invited brief answers or through insufficient responses to children's early sounds. Parents should weigh the appealing activities alongside how adults extend a child's participation.
Physical activity was evident in September 2024. Babies had room to work on standing, crawling and walking, while older children climbed and ran. Threading and making marks added opportunities to practise smaller hand movements. This gave the day different kinds of physical challenge, rather than treating movement solely as running about.
At the September 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that practitioners used observations to recognise gaps in children's development, worked effectively with other professionals and exchanged information regularly with parents. For families whose child needs additional help, the significant detail is the connection between noticing a difficulty and involving others who can support them.
Everyday care also received attention in September 2024. Practitioners comforted unsettled children and responded promptly when nappies needed changing. These are small, repeated interactions, but they matter to babies and toddlers who depend on adults recognising their needs before they can explain them clearly.
Social learning ran through the same routines. In September 2024, adults encouraged sharing and turn-taking, and helped children think about feelings and the effect of their behaviour on others. This placed relationships alongside practical independence, rather than making doing things alone the only goal.
In September 2024, a chef prepared meals adapted to children's dietary needs. Food routines also involved children in serving themselves, linking eating with the wider emphasis on everyday skills.
The nursery opens Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, throughout the year except bank holidays. This opening window is useful for families comparing nursery hours with work commitments and the routines of other children in the household.

In September 2024, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated participation statement, rather than a guarantee of a funded arrangement for an individual family. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Ladybird Montessori Sutton suits families who value practical independence and want weekday childcare across the year. Its September 2024 examples give that philosophy substance: serving food, managing clothing and joining songs in different languages. The Good judgement is balanced by specific work on adult interaction and language development. Those priorities make the quality of everyday conversation an especially useful consideration when choosing this nursery.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good in September 2024. Improvement priorities concerned staff support during activities and making fuller use of opportunities to develop children's language.
