Vegetable growing, magnifying-glass hunts for small creatures and autumn conker collecting give Short Heath Road a recognisable outdoor character. Its natural garden is used throughout the year, with activities changing with the seasons. For children who enjoy investigating living things and getting involved outdoors, that is a concrete attraction.
The Little Ripley Day Nursery Short Heath Road has 52 places in total and accepts children aged 0 to 60 months. At its 12 October 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good overall and judged the quality of education Good. The practical starting point is an Erdington nursery with separate rooms for successive stages of childhood and opening hours spanning the working day.
The room sequence comprises Baby room, Toddlers, Tweenies, Little Learners and Pre-School. This gives families a useful way to understand progression through the nursery: children move between rooms rather than remaining in one mixed-stage space throughout their attendance.
In October 2022, children in the Baby Room selected books for themselves and explored turning their pages; the Toddler Room used family photographs on a display to help staff understand important relationships at home. The Tweenies Room planned activities around individual next steps, while children in the Little Learners Room practised shared routines, including clearing away and preparing to wash their hands before eating.
The Pre-school Room added language to drawing activities in October 2022: children making self-portraits encountered vocabulary for less familiar body parts. These examples connect learning to something children are already doing. They also show different emphases across the rooms, from handling books and recognising family relationships to managing routines and extending vocabulary.
The early years foundation stage is the statutory framework for children's learning, development and care. In everyday parent language, it connects play and practical experiences with developing communication, physical skills and independence.
In October 2022, stories, singing and signing supported communication. A reading den gave books a dedicated setting, and a buddy bench provided a place for children to make connections with one another. Children also followed a story of the week. Books were part of children's own choices as well as staff-led experiences.
Individual planning was also the main educational improvement point in October 2022. Planning in the Tweenies Room was precise, but other rooms needed to use what staff knew about each child more effectively when deciding what to teach next. For parents, the distinction matters: an interesting activity should also have a clear purpose for their particular child.
The natural garden changes the texture of the current nursery day. Spring brings vegetable growing; summer includes sprinkler play; autumn provides leaves and conkers to collect. In winter, snow permits snowman building and sledging. Magnifying glasses add close observation to hunts for small creatures, giving outdoor play an investigative element alongside movement.
In October 2022, daily garden use included ball play, balancing challenges and climbing on a large wooden frame. Babies wore weatherproof clothing to use the space when the ground was wet. Those dated examples help explain how outdoor access worked across ages, rather than only for the older children.
In October 2022, babies received physical comfort and reassurance while becoming accustomed to being away from their carers. Family photographs in the toddler space helped staff respond to changes at home, including the birth of a sibling. Familiar relationships therefore had a place in the nursery's account of each child.
At the October 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described timely assessment and responsive support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, who made good progress. These are dated judgements about practice at that visit.
Independence was visible in everyday tasks in October 2022. Toddlers fed themselves using cutlery, and children made decisions about their activities and managed personal care. Small routines gave children opportunities to practise doing things for themselves, rather than treating preparation for the next stage as a separate lesson.
Communication needed further work in October 2022: families needed a clearer understanding of what staff intended children to learn next. That is more specific than receiving news of a busy day. Knowing the next learning step helps parents connect nursery experiences with what happens at home.
Opening hours are 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday; weekends are closed. The nursery operates throughout the year apart from bank holidays. This is useful for families whose childcare needs continue beyond school terms, while the bank-holiday closures still need to fit their working arrangements.
The address is 105 Short Heath Road, Erdington, Birmingham, B23 6LH. Branch enquiries can be made by telephone on 0121 382 8881, by email or through the contact form.
In October 2022, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Short Heath Road suits families drawn to seasonal garden experiences and a progression of rooms from infancy towards preschool. Vegetable growing and close-up investigation give its outdoor offer substance. Its year-round opening also suits working families needing care beyond term time. The October 2022 planning and communication concerns make the connection between each child's activities, next steps and home learning the most useful subject for a visit.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its 12 October 2022 inspection. More precise individual planning and clearer communication about future learning were the areas for improvement.
