The beach gives Bloomsbury on the Beach Day Nursery its character: coastal exploration, outdoor play and environmental learning shape the offer on Brighton’s Madeira Drive. Beach School combines early-years learning with seaside experiences, making the surroundings part of what children do rather than simply a backdrop.
There are 36 places in total, for children aged 30 to 60 months. This is an option for older toddlers and preschool children. At its September 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective, children making good progress and support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities directed towards their individual needs.
Full-day sessions run from 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. The strongest reason to consider it is the connection between practical learning and its coastal setting; the main questions concern how staff extend learning and respond to children’s emotions.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children’s learning, development and care. In everyday terms, that brings communication, physical skills and social development into play and practical activities, rather than treating learning as a separate block of the day.
Beach School adds a coastal emphasis: outdoor experiences connect the early-years curriculum with nature and the seaside. Outdoor play and yoga sessions are also part of the offer. For a child who enjoys being active, these give movement a place alongside exploration.
In September 2024, children joined singing accompanied by a staff member playing guitar. Familiar songs gave them a way to participate while hearing language in a shared activity. Food preparation offered a different kind of concentration: children practised with knives and peelers while making vegetables ready for soup. Small tools brought hand control into a task with a real purpose.
Activities were revisited to help children retain what they had learnt. However, in September 2024, staff sometimes stopped short of taking that learning further. Repetition and an appropriate next challenge are different things; families should weigh both when considering the nursery’s teaching.
Madeira Drive places the nursery beside the sea, and outdoor learning includes an emphasis on sustainability. The coastal setting has a practical educational use here.
In September 2024, beach outings involved searching for objects and discussing discoveries with other children. Children also took part in small beach cleans and learnt about caring for the ocean. These experiences linked exploration with responsibility for the environment. Outings to a local garden space brought another setting into the day, with children recalling safety rules before leaving.
Relationships supplied useful information for planning in September 2024: key persons got to know children and their families, then used that understanding to adapt educational activities. This gave family knowledge a role in the child’s learning, rather than keeping it separate from nursery routines.
Children who spoke English as an additional language received support in September 2024. Staff encouraged conversation and independence, including children pouring their own drinks from a water dispenser. That is a concrete example of self-care becoming something children practise themselves.
Emotional support was less consistent. In September 2024, children received affection and had warm relationships with staff, but minor upsets were sometimes passed over rather than acknowledged. The improvement priority was to help staff recognise and validate children’s feelings more consistently. This matters for children still learning how to express disappointment or explain what has upset them.
Freshly prepared breakfast, lunch, tea and snacks are provided daily and included in the full-day fee. Nappies and formula are included too, reducing the number of everyday items families need to organise separately for that attendance pattern.
The address is Units 1-4, 300 Madeira Drive, Brighton, BN2 1BX. Full-day care runs from 7.30am until 6.30pm on weekdays, with early starts and late finishes included in the full-day fee arrangement.
The nursery operates across the year and opens for 50 weeks annually. The enquiry form lets families indicate attendance on two, three, four or five days a week; these are enquiry choices rather than a promise of a particular booking. Families can enquire through the branch form, and tours can be arranged through the contact route.
Funded childcare includes 15 Hours Funding and 30 Hours Funding. These sit alongside the paid full-day offer; eligibility for funding and the nursery’s participation are separate matters.
For full-day fees, meals, snacks, nappies and formula are included, as are creative classes and outdoor trips. A deposit applies. Families receive current prices through the nursery’s written quotation, which provides the basis for comparing their intended attendance with the funded-hours arrangement.
Bloomsbury on the Beach suits families seeking weekday full-day care for older toddlers or preschool children, especially those drawn to outdoor exploration and practical environmental learning. Beach School and the coastal setting give the offer a clear character; practical food preparation also featured at the September 2024 inspection.
The September 2024 priorities also deserve attention: extending learning and acknowledging children’s feelings consistently. Those are useful subjects for a visit because they concern the interactions that make the biggest difference to a child’s day.
