Bright Sparks Pre-School And Out Of School Club

At a Glance

Growing vegetables, watching chicks develop and testing balance on a wobbly bridge gave Bright Sparks a practical, outdoor character in May 2022. Children could follow a process from planting to eating, making learning tangible rather than abstract.

Ofsted rated the setting Good on 11 May 2022, with positive findings about its education and an improvement point concerning less confident children during free play. Bright Sparks is based at Andrews Lane Primary School in Cheshunt and has capacity for 30 children aged 3 to 60 months.

The Nursery Experience

In May 2022, the garden supported both investigation and physical activity. Children searched for insects, used spinning tops to develop strength and rolled tyres across the garden. These experiences gave them reasons to observe closely, practise balance and persist when a task went wrong.

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play and everyday experiences support learning alongside their wellbeing. In May 2022, staff used clocks to connect time with familiar parts of the day, including lunch and going home. Learning had an immediate purpose.

That month, newly hatched chicks prompted comparisons of size and feather colour. Handling fruit and vegetables encouraged children to examine real objects and extend their vocabulary. Books, singing and small-group speaking activities added other opportunities to practise language. Staff planned next steps around what individual children could already do.

Care and Support

At the May 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including working links with other professionals.

In May 2022, staff encouraged independence through everyday tasks, including potty use, and children understood familiar routines and behavioural boundaries. Adult interaction usually helped children explore and participate, but quieter children could become less involved when sessions grew busy. Staff sometimes took too long to notice and reconnect them with an activity. For families with a hesitant child, that finding deserves attention alongside the positive examples of individual support.

Practical Information

The address is Andrews Lane Primary School, Andrews Lane, Cheshunt, Waltham Cross, EN7 6LB.

In May 2022, the preschool operated on weekdays during school terms, opening from 8.15am to 3pm; the out-of-school club opened from 3pm to 6pm. Funded early education was offered for children aged two, three and four at that time.

The preschool occupied the school grounds in May 2022. Attendance does not guarantee a Reception place: families still apply through the local authority admissions process.

Things to Consider

  • Quieter children. The May 2022 improvement action concerned participation during free play. On a visit, ask how staff notice children who hang back and help them join in.
  • Attendance arrangements. The May 2022 preschool timetable was term-time. What current attendance patterns and age groups does Bright Sparks accept?
  • School placement. Sharing school grounds does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat the preschool decision and the school application as separate choices.

The Verdict

Bright Sparks merits consideration for families who value practical learning and outdoor exploration. The May 2022 examples connect language, physical development and independence with things children could handle, grow and observe. For a less confident child, the central decision is how effectively staff now support participation during busy free play.
