Nature bags taken home, root vegetables explored by smell and touch, and books shared in cosy areas give Little People’s August 2023 nursery day a practical, hands-on character. Everyday experiences supplied the learning material.
Partou Little People Day Nursery & Pre-school is on Piccadilly Road in Burnley, BB11 4PP, with capacity for 71 children aged 0 to 60 months. At its 8 August 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good and found safeguarding effective, with children making good progress.
The early years foundation stage is the framework for children’s learning, development and care: play, conversation and practical experiences help children build skills. In August 2023, nature bags extended exploration into family life, with children collecting natural objects at home. Exploring root vegetables brought texture and smell into the learning too.
Mathematics started with everyday language. In August 2023, adults introduced babies to words about size and quantity during play, while questions encouraged older children to think about numbers. Reading happened throughout the day, with older children gathering in cosy areas for stories. These were opportunities to connect language with things children could see and do.
In August 2023, conversations with adults also introduced children to new words, alongside the vocabulary they encountered in stories. Staff supported children learning English as an additional language. That placed language learning within ordinary exchanges and shared reading, rather than limiting it to a single activity. For families whose children were learning more than one language, this was a relevant part of the nursery day: communication received attention during both play and time with books.
Social learning was practical too. In August 2023, adults helped children share materials and wait for a turn, demonstrated considerate ways of speaking, and encouraged polite behaviour. They explained safe play and reminded children of expectations, helping them connect their actions with the effect on other people. Encouragement extended to unfamiliar experiences and to trying again when something was difficult. These everyday interactions gave children opportunities to practise being part of a group, as well as opportunities to explore materials and develop their language.
There was also a clear limitation in August 2023: adults sometimes missed children losing interest in activities and did not transfer the intended learning into play those children chose themselves. Adapting activities to reach every child was the improvement required.
In August 2023, practitioners had close relationships with their key children, and babies joined adults in singing and dancing. Parents discussed development with staff and contributed their own observations, giving home and nursery a way to share what mattered for each child.
Additional support involved decisions about resources as well as daily interactions. In August 2023, leaders discussed the use of extra funding with practitioners, families and other professionals. This included early years pupil premium, additional funding used to address differences in development and enrich children’s learning experiences. The practical value for parents was their involvement in those decisions: information from home could contribute to how support was planned. Alongside discussions about progress, this gave families a role in identifying what mattered for their child’s development and the experiences intended to help.
Independence was built through small tasks in August 2023. Children practised managing coats and shoes, babies reached for their own drinking cups, and adults encouraged early use of cutlery. Toilet learning came with encouragement. Daily outdoor access and conversations about healthy eating accompanied this practical care, while staff helped parents access dental care for their children.
Opening hours are 7.15am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates across the year, closing for one week at Christmas, Good Friday and Easter Monday. Those closures matter for families organising care around work.
In August 2023, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. This is a dated account of its funding participation.
Little People suits Burnley families seeking weekday care across the year who value learning through practical exploration. Its August 2023 character combined natural materials, stories and everyday independence. The Good judgement gives a positive dated assessment, balanced by the need to make planned learning accessible when children choose a different activity.
