Giant Leap Childcare & Learning Centre

At a Glance

In July 2023, den building, insect searches and outdoor balancing gave Giant Leap a practical, exploratory character. At its July 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that children with SEND received exceptional support and made good progress.

Based at Coal Clough House in Burnley, the nursery accepts babies and children up to 60 months old. The inspection gives a useful picture of children's experiences, while later regulatory action makes supervision and outdoor safety important considerations for families.

The Nursery Experience

In July 2023, children explored imaginary dinosaur worlds, hunted for insects and constructed dens. Staff adjusted activities around emerging interests, giving children reasons to stay involved. Mathematical learning included counting, simple calculations and comparing sizes.

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care. In July 2023, its everyday expression included conversations, books, songs and physical play: younger children heard adults describe their play and introduce vocabulary, while older children answered questions and shared ideas.

Outside, low climbing equipment, tricycles and small balancing beams offered different physical challenges in July 2023. Children also dug in soil for treasure. Forest-school activities included climbing trees and learning to judge safety, linking exploration with practical care for themselves.

Care and Support

During July 2023, children practised handling feelings and disagreements, helped put resources away and managed personal care tasks. Adults modelled considerate behaviour and recognised children's kindness. These were concrete opportunities to practise independence alongside getting along with others.

The special educational needs coordinator helped staff identify when additional intervention was needed and put strategies into practice in July 2023. Staff also undertook safeguarding training and assessed risks around the premises. These arrangements belong to that dated inspection picture.

In August 2025 and January 2026 complaint publications, Ofsted recorded breaches followed by corrective action, including safeguarding guidance for senior staff, revised risk assessments and changes to supervision procedures. The August case's safeguarding and welfare actions were accepted as met following the September 2025 response; the January publication described changes concerning large outdoor equipment and staff supervision.

Practical Information

Coal Clough House is on Coal Clough Lane, Burnley, BB11 4NJ. Opening hours are 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, throughout the year, with bank holidays excluded. This gives families a broad weekday opening window.

In July 2023, session times ran from 7.30am to 6pm, and the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. Those details describe the arrangements at that time.

Things to Consider

  • Outdoor supervision. The January 2026 complaint publication described revised supervision and risk assessments for large outdoor equipment. Ask how these procedures work during outdoor play today.
  • Staff consistency. In July 2023, less experienced practitioners needed a clearer understanding of the curriculum, and routines and transitions needed more consistent handling. Ask how staff training now addresses these two points.
  • Your attendance pattern. The current opening window spans the working day; in July 2023, sessions ran from 7.30am to 6pm. Discuss the booking pattern and funded-hours terms that would fit your family.

The Verdict

Giant Leap suits families seeking weekday care; active exploration, language and growing independence were features of its July 2023 inspection picture. In July 2023, den building, conversations and personal care tasks gave children opportunities to explore, communicate and practise independence. Later changes to outdoor risk assessment and supervision deserve equal weight in a parent's decision, alongside how consistently staff manage learning and daily routines.
