Toddlers pouring their own drinks and older children serving their own meals give Puddleducks Day Nursery a practical thread: learning to do things for themselves. In July 2023, these everyday tasks sat alongside singing, water play and early mark-making. Small actions carried real learning.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its 13 July 2023 inspection, with education also judged Good. Based in Hednesford, it has capacity for 27 children and accepts ages from 2 to 60 months. The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care, bringing communication, movement and early understanding into everyday play. In July 2023, babies practised walking with adult encouragement, toddlers worked on ball skills and older children became more confident pedalling tricycles. These activities gave different ages their own physical challenges.
Creative play included printing with celery and using drawing materials, while filling and emptying containers introduced early mathematical ideas. Staff used repeated sounds with babies and questions with older children to encourage conversation. Learning followed children's interests and what they were ready to tackle next.
Outings in July 2023 included a shop, a farm and the library, connecting play with the surrounding community. Books and stories also featured within the nursery. Teaching varied across the staff team, however, and further staff development was needed to make its quality more consistent.
At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), making good progress. Support included collaboration with outside professionals and individual care for children needing additional help.
In July 2023, babies received comfort when hungry or tired, and staff helped them explore food textures as part of weaning. Familiarisation with the next room helped children prepare for a move, while mixed-age play in the garden offered opportunities to get to know others. Photographs and stories about their future school supported the next transition.
Daily conversations kept parents informed about care at that visit. The weaker point was extending the partnership into learning at home, an important distinction for families wanting practical ideas to use beyond nursery hours.
