A mentor dog gives emotional learning a concrete form at Rose Hill, Hednesford Nursery School: in July 2024, children learnt to recognise when the dog welcomed contact, then connected that understanding with their friends' feelings. Language, mathematical play and growing independence also shaped the day.
At its July 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that teaching extended children's knowledge through an ambitious curriculum. There was a specific weakness to address: younger children's lunchtime routines.
The nursery has capacity for 64 children. Children attending in July 2024 were aged 0 to 4; that age range describes the inspection visit.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the July 2024 examples included learning through sand play, games and conversations, making abstract ideas tangible.
Mathematics developed in stages. In July 2024, younger children explored filling and emptying, before progressing to size and counting; preschool games introduced subitising. Activities also revisited earlier learning, giving children opportunities to practise rather than moving straight to something new.
Sea creatures supplied another route into language. Children named clownfish and sea horses, while staff extended vocabulary and encouraged thinking. The detail matters: conversation accompanied discovery rather than sitting apart from it.
Independence was practical, too. In July 2024, younger children tidied and cleared their plates, while older children chose activities, looked after belongings and managed personal care. These everyday responsibilities supported preparation for school.
Space to recover emotionally was part of the environment in July 2024. Staff discussed feelings with children and helped them identify what might make them feel better. The mentor dog added an opportunity to practise reading another being's signals before approaching.
At the July 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities made good progress, with staff, parents and professionals working together on support. One example involved following medical advice to help a child walk independently and join friends outdoors.
In July 2024, families received ideas for continuing learning at home, and leaders monitored staff practice through supervision. However, younger children were not consistently supervised while eating or supported to ensure handwashing after bathroom use. That is a care issue with direct relevance to daily routines.
The address is Hednesford Nursery School, Eskrett Street, Hednesford, WS12 1AR.
