Ladybird Forest Pre-School Ampthill

At a Glance

Tyres, planks and a mud kitchen give Ladybird Forest Pre-School Ampthill an outdoor character that reaches beyond its name. In February 2025, children balanced in the garden, experimented with ingredients and talked enthusiastically about making mud cakes. Physical exploration was a substantial part of their day.

Ofsted rated the pre-school Good on 7 February 2025 and judged its safeguarding arrangements effective. It has capacity for 43 children. Children attending at that inspection were aged 2 to 7; that is an inspection-time age range.

The Nursery Experience

In February 2025, the forest school curriculum included adventurous play with safety teaching, giving children opportunities to try challenges while learning how to manage them. The mud kitchen area added imaginative play to that outdoor experience. Indoors, coloured scarves accompanied movement activities, while pipettes, bowls and spoons became tools for mixing pretend potions.

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: here, the February 2025 activities illustrate learning through play, conversation and physical exploration. Books and story sacks were accessible to children, and community outings included a recent fire-station visit, connecting their learning with people and places beyond the pre-school.

At the February 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that staff did not consistently translate curriculum plans into learning that extended children's skills, vocabulary support varied, and communication aids for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities were not used consistently across staff. These are material qualifications to the Good judgement.

Care and Support

In February 2025, settling arrangements began with home visits and conversations about children's starting points and parents' concerns. Settling was tailored to each child, with a key person providing continuity. That arrangement gave staff a chance to understand the child before expecting them to adjust to pre-school routines.

A calm room provided space for exploring emotions in February 2025. Staff discussed feelings with children and demonstrated expected behaviour, making emotional understanding part of everyday routines. Picture cards and sign language were among the communication tools used, although the inconsistency described above matters for children who depend on those methods.

Health activities at that time included toothbrushing and learning about sugar in food and drinks, with opportunities to continue learning at home. Parents received guidance about healthy lunch boxes. Staff also exchanged practice with local schools and other providers, and used information from schools to develop the curriculum.

Practical Information

The address is Queens Road, Ampthill, BEDFORD MK45 2TD.

In February 2025, opening hours were 7.45am to 6pm on weekdays during term time. A holiday club also operated during some school holidays, from 9am to 4pm. These are dated operating arrangements rather than a current booking promise.

At that time, the pre-school provided funded early education to eligible children. Eligibility remains an important condition of that offer.

Things to Consider

  • Learning consistency. The February 2025 improvement priorities concerned staff's delivery of the curriculum and children's language development. On a visit, ask how staff now extend an activity beyond its initial idea.
  • Communication support. Picture cards and sign language were used unevenly in February 2025. For a child who relies on communication aids, ask how their use is maintained across practitioners.
  • Attendance arrangements. The February 2025 operation combined term-time opening with a club in some school holidays. Ask which attendance arrangement matches your family's calendar.

The Verdict

Ladybird suits families drawn to outdoor exploration, imaginative play and individual settling arrangements. Its February 2025 practice gives concrete reasons for that appeal: balancing challenges, mud play and home visits. The Good judgement sits alongside clear concerns about consistency in teaching and communication support, making those the most useful subjects for a visit.
