Direct outdoor access from every care room gives Tangent House a clear practical identity: babies, toddlers and preschool children each have a route outside, rather than outdoor play depending on a shared indoor starting point. The purpose-built nursery in Thurmaston also has underfloor heating and air conditioning. These are useful features for a day that moves between indoor activities, care routines and outdoor play.
Tangent House has capacity for 70 children, with a current age range starting at three months and extending to five years. Butterfly Room, Ladybird Room and Caterpillar Room organise care by developmental stage. At its August 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective, while identifying weaknesses in curriculum clarity and activities that sometimes constrained children's independent exploration.
Attendance can be term-time or year-round, with both private and funded sessions. That choice matters, but the stronger reason to consider Tangent House is the combination of accessible play spaces, a structured settling process and regular communication between home and nursery.
Butterfly Room cares for babies up to two years, with its own kitchen area and a door to outdoor space, giving practical care and outdoor activity a place within the room's arrangements. Ladybird Room accommodates children aged two to three, with particular attention to toilet training and its own outdoor access. Caterpillar Room serves three- to five-year-olds, encouraging independence with dressing, hygiene and meals alongside direct access outside.
Across the rooms, picture-labelled drawers let children select toys themselves. Reading, construction, imaginative play and creative work have designated spaces; resources change to reflect children's ages and interests. The arrangement gives children something concrete to choose from, rather than making every activity dependent on an adult handing out materials.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the statutory framework: children's days combine communication, physical and social development with experiences involving stories, numbers, creativity and understanding the world. Tangent House's education and wellbeing information connects observation and planning with children's interests. The framework is the baseline for early-years provision; the useful detail here is how learning is organised and shared.
In August 2025, language practice extended beyond planned activities. Staff echoed children's words, talked alongside their play and used songs during handwashing, with a story and song selected for the week. Babies practised movement with equipment including a ball pit, while older children explored construction play with friends. These examples show learning taking place through conversation, movement and play, rather than only during group instruction.
There was a clear limitation. In August 2025, learning aims were sometimes too loosely defined for activities to build effectively on earlier experiences, while some adult-directed tasks narrowed children's opportunities to investigate for themselves. The improvement priorities were therefore connected: make the intended learning clearer, then use that intention to support curiosity rather than close it down.
Each room opens directly to an outdoor area, and the nursery has all-weather external play spaces. The daily routine includes opportunities for outside play during both morning and afternoon periods. This makes outdoor activity part of the ordinary day, alongside indoor play, rather than a separate occasional event.
The routine is an example, with adjustments for children's needs and different age groups. Babies can have additional milk, rest and quiet periods. For parents, the useful distinction is between an organised daily sequence and a rigid timetable: the nursery describes room routines that can accommodate younger children's care needs.
Settling has a concrete sequence. Complimentary introductory sessions follow registration: a parent or carer is encouraged to remain for the first visit, which lasts approximately one hour, while the second usually lasts around two hours with the child attending independently. The change is gradual. Children have an opportunity to become familiar with their room and practitioners before a normal session begins.
A key person normally takes primary responsibility for the child's learning and everyday care, and families learn who this is during the first settling session. Communication combines daily feedback with an online app for messages, activity records and learning journals. Preschool feedback may be verbal unless parents request otherwise, with children encouraged to describe their own day too.
Learning Journey is the nursery's record of a child's development, bringing together observations, photographs, creative work and information from home. Parents can contribute their own observations through the app. All About Me Update gathers changes in a child's life, helping staff connect nursery experiences with what is happening beyond the room.
In August 2025, written and spoken daily updates operated alongside opportunities for parents to discuss their children's development. Room moves also involved more detailed information-sharing between staff. These arrangements matter because changing rooms involves new relationships as well as a different physical space.
The staff structure includes a Special Educational Needs Coordinator and a Designated Safeguarding Lead, and practitioners receive paediatric first aid training. These are identifiable responsibilities and arrangements. They give families a clear starting point for discussing additional needs, health matters or a concern about a child's care.
Developmental observation includes the EYFS progress check at age two, with findings shared with parents and their views sought. When children leave for school, the nursery forwards its development tracker and transition form to their new school. That supports continuity of information about learning and development.
A cook prepares the nursery's food, using a three-week menu cycle adjusted seasonally, and dietary requirements are catered for. Preschool children can practise serving themselves at mealtimes, making eating another opportunity to build everyday independence.
Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays, across the year, with closures on bank holidays and the afternoons of Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The address is Tangent House, 640 Melton Road, Thurmaston, Leicester LE4 8BB. An enquiry form accepts a preferred visit date and time, alongside the child's expected starting date.
Private attendance includes a normal day from 8am to 6pm, a long day from 7.30am to 6pm, and shorter days from 9am to 5pm or 9am to 4pm. Morning sessions run from 8am or 7.30am until 1pm; afternoon sessions run from 1pm to 6pm. A single session per week is also an attendance option, so the model extends beyond full-week care.
Funded attendance has its own patterns. The 15-hour options include afternoons from 2pm to 5pm across five days, or half days from 8am to 1pm or 1pm to 6pm across three days, including a Monday or Friday. A substantial day runs from 9am to 4.30pm across two days, and a full-day option runs from 8am to 6pm.
For 30 hours, short-day choices run from 8am to 2pm, 9am to 3pm or noon to 6pm across five days. Substantial days run from 9am to 4.30pm across four days; full days run from 8am to 6pm across three days, including a Monday or Friday. These booking conditions make the chosen pattern as important as the total funded entitlement.
Funded childcare includes 15 hours for all three- and four-year-olds, 15 hours for qualifying two-year-olds, and 30 hours for working parents of three- and four-year-olds, subject to conditions. Additional private hours and services can supplement funded attendance. The fees and funding page sets out the entitlement and session choices; current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Meals and consumables are charged separately on funded sessions. Families therefore need to distinguish the funded childcare hours from the accompanying charges when comparing patterns. A registration charge also applies to private bookings.
On-site parking is provided. For families travelling by car, it is a practical feature alongside the Melton Road address.
Tangent House suits families seeking morning or afternoon sessions as well as normal, extended or shorter days, with term-time and year-round attendance choices. Direct outdoor access, staged settling and Learning Journey communication give the offer substance beyond its timetable.
The August 2025 curriculum concerns deserve attention: good relationships and accessible resources do not by themselves ensure that every activity moves learning forward. Families who value frequent home-nursery communication and practical independence have clear reasons to consider it, while the way staff now balance teaching intentions with children's curiosity is the key point to explore.
Ofsted rated Tangent House Good in August 2025 and found safeguarding effective. Improvement priorities concerned clearer curriculum intentions and activities that better support children's independence and curiosity.
