P K Kids Day Nursery and Pre-School, Chorley

At a Glance

Helping a friend with shoes, balancing outdoors and experimenting with foam: in September 2021, everyday play and small responsibilities shaped children's experience at P K Kids. Independence had practical expression, from dressing for outdoor play to helping clear away sand.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its 13 September 2021 inspection. Based at Rainbow House in Chorley, it accepts children from birth to five years and has capacity for 53 children.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care, so the day combines learning with play and everyday routines. In September 2021, staff planned activities around children's interests and preferences, giving those interests a role in what they explored next.

Physical experiences differed with age. That September, babies practised pulling themselves upright against furniture and spent time in the ball pool; foam exploration gave them opportunities to move their fingers. Older children practised balancing and climbing, with steps and a slide providing opportunities to learn about taking turns and moving safely.

Language teaching was less consistent. In September 2021, preschool games introduced vocabulary about position and movement, while younger children received less effective questioning and fewer descriptions to extend their language. This matters for parents comparing the experience of babies and toddlers with that of preschool children.

Care and Support

At its September 2021 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective, with staff recognising potential welfare concerns, understanding reporting routes and maintaining accident and medication records.

Relationships also had a practical role that September. Staff listened to older children's suggestions and used praise and encouragement to guide behaviour. Information gathered from families when children started helped shape their learning, while emails, telephone conversations and an app supported communication about development.

Staff support needed attention in September 2021. Induction was inconsistently applied, leaving some new practitioners uncertain about their responsibilities, and supervision and feedback were insufficiently regular or purposeful. These were management improvement points alongside the weakness in younger children's language teaching.

Practical Information

Rainbow House is on Langton Brow, Chorley, PR7 5PB. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, with year-round opening and a six-day Christmas closure.

Things to Consider

  • Younger children's conversation. Language teaching for younger children needed improvement in September 2021. During a visit, ask how practitioners now extend babies' and toddlers' communication during play.
  • Support for practitioners. September 2021 improvement points included induction, supervision and feedback. Ask how new staff are prepared for their roles and how their practice is reviewed.
  • Your attendance and care package. With year-round opening and a Christmas closure, ask which booking pattern fits your week and how funded hours, meals and non-food consumables would be treated in your quotation.

The Verdict

For Chorley families seeking childcare from babyhood through the preschool years, P K Kids merits consideration on the strength of its Good 2021 judgement and the concrete examples of independence and physical play from that period. Parents of younger children should give language support particular attention, alongside the arrangements for developing and supporting practitioners.
