Newquay Pre-school and Nursery

At a Glance

A pirate ship, a giant sandpit and outings to Newquay Orchards give Newquay Pre-school and Nursery a clear outdoor character. Its gardens support digging, climbing, building and imaginative play, while four rooms separate the youngest children from those preparing for school.

At its July 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding arrangements effective. That judgement comes with a specific qualification: toddler language support and the training and supervision of staff working with toddlers needed further attention.

The nursery has capacity for 65 children, with a current age range of 10 months to five years. It is based at Football Club Car Park, Newquay, TR7 2BU, near Newquay Football club. Attendance can be built around different start and collection times, with both term-time and year-round arrangements.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Daisy Room has a published maximum of six children, with its room description covering babies from six months to approximately one year; sensory experiences support early movement and communication, and a separate outdoor area gives this small room space beyond its indoor surroundings. The room's stated starting age is younger than the nursery's current overall age range, making the entry point a useful question for families with younger babies.

Green Room serves children approaching their second birthday and has 15 spaces per session; books and a quiet corner sit alongside construction and messy play, with a fully covered outdoor area and access to the larger garden.

Blue Room accommodates up to 20 children per session at approximately two to three years old; its light table, book corner and free-flow outdoor access support investigation and increasingly independent choices.

Yellow Room is for older preschool children, usually in the year before school; child-led and adult-supported experiences develop independence, with free-flow access to a large covered outdoor area and other parts of the garden.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care. In practical terms, learning includes play, communication, movement and becoming more independent. The rooms give those experiences different settings as children grow.

In July 2023, babies used a wooden ramp to practise movement, and staff added musical toys when children became interested in making sounds. Books and songs also featured in their communication experiences. Preschool children cared for caterpillars after showing an interest in butterflies, making an everyday fascination into something they could observe and look after.

Mathematical play in July 2023 included counting during conversations about vegetables and constructing houses from differently shaped pieces. These examples show how familiar objects and children's interests can carry learning. The toddler findings were less consistent: adults sometimes supplied answers to their own questions before children could respond, and mark-making activities were not always extended into the intended learning.

A creative lead now provides opportunities for children to explore ideas, tackle problems and develop their imagination. On-site chefs also run cooking workshops around healthy foods. Those additions give children practical ways to create and experiment alongside their room-based play.

Outdoor and Community Life

The mud kitchen and water play area offer different materials to handle and investigate. Undercover construction space, a woodwork area and a stage add building and performance opportunities. A giant sandpit makes digging a whole-body activity, while the pirate ship and climbing structures give children ways to practise balance and movement.

A small secret garden contains a play house and resources children can choose themselves.

Community outings extend beyond the gardens. Some of the oldest children attend forest School sessions with Go Outdoors at Newquay Orchards. This is an outing-based addition for that group, rather than an activity promised to every child. Daisy Room also has occasional walks and outings using a multi-seat buggy.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Each child has a key person, supported by a buddy when that practitioner is away. The arrangement gives families a main contact while making provision for their absence. Room leadership is also organised across Daisy Room, Green Room, Blue Room and Yellow Room, so responsibility sits within the children's everyday spaces.

Settling is gradual. Parents are advised to use at least two free settling sessions, lasting one or two hours, and the process can be extended according to how the child manages. This allows the first separation to be approached in shorter stages rather than assuming every child will adjust at the same pace.

In July 2023, staff established children's starting points with parents and used their interests to plan experiences. Families received information about what children were working towards next, with suggested books to support learning at home.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found effective support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including visual communication cards, objects to explain upcoming activities, and collaboration with parents and outside professionals. These were specific mechanisms for helping children participate, rather than a general promise of inclusion.

Blue Room has a safeguarding officer role. In July 2023, preschool children also practised everyday safety with staff, including handling a knife to cut fruit and considering where heavier materials should go when building a den. Toddlers and preschool children discussed handwashing. These examples connect care with learning to recognise and manage familiar risks.

Independence was visible in ordinary routines in July 2023: preschool children buttered toast and cleared plates, toddlers helped clean tables, and babies began feeding themselves.

On-site chefs prepare meals and run healthy-food cooking workshops. Cooked dinners and tea-time meals are optional and charged separately; parents supply their child's nappies, wipes and creams.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7.45am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, for 50 weeks each year. Families can choose term-time attendance or childcare across the year.

Flexible bookings use starts at 7.45am, 8am or 9am, with scheduled collections at 2pm, 3pm, 3.30pm, 4pm, 5pm or 6pm. Parents can build attendance around those choices; an occasional collection outside them needs advance agreement. Flexibility therefore operates through defined collection points.

Full-day care runs from 8am to 6pm. Its discounted full-day price applies only to non-funded children. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, and the fees and funding information explains the charging structure.

Getting There

The nursery's address is Football Club Car Park, Newquay, TR7 2BU; its contact address uses Clevedon Road in the same postcode. Enquiries can be made by telephone or email, with an online enquiry route also provided.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare is offered for the nine-month, two-year and three/four-year age groups. The funding information includes working-parent funding, including 30 hours, and disadvantaged funding for eligible children aged two and above. Eligibility conditions apply, including the relevant birthday and following term; participation in funding is not a promise that every family qualifies.

Meal charges are optional and separate, including for funded attendance. Parents provide nappies, wipes and creams, and the nursery makes no additional consumables charge. Families can budget separately for optional meals and bring nappies, wipes and creams from home.

Things to Consider

  • Toddler conversation and staff support. In July 2023, adults sometimes answered before toddlers could speak, and staff development systems were not fully embedded. On a visit, ask how toddler conversations and staff supervision have changed since those findings.
  • The youngest starting age. Daisy Room describes provision from six months, while the nursery's current overall age range starts at 10 months. Families considering an earlier start should clarify the applicable entry age before planning attendance.
  • Collection points. Flexible attendance still uses scheduled finishes from 2pm onwards, with one-off exceptions agreed beforehand. Compare those collection points with your working day rather than assuming any finish time can be booked.

The Verdict

Newquay Pre-school and Nursery suits families looking for either flexible sessions or an 8am-to-6pm full day, with a choice between term-time and year-round attendance. Its strongest practical attractions are the small published cap in Daisy Room, covered outdoor space across several rooms, and gardens equipped for both physical and imaginative play.

The July 2023 Good judgement supports a positive assessment, but the toddler findings deserve a direct conversation. For families whose priorities include outdoor experiences, gradual settling and clear choices about attendance and meal charges, there is substantial detail here on which to base a decision.
