The Honey Jar gives this Camborne nursery a recognisable identity: a purpose-built baby unit alongside a wider setting with separate toddler and preschool rooms, plus Roos, small-group developmental support led by the SENDCo team. Rosemellin Gooseberry Bush Day Nursery combines care for babies with preparation for school. Its practical appeal is the choice between attendance through the year and rooms organised around school terms.
At its 3 February 2026 inspection, Ofsted judged all assessed areas to be at the Expected standard and safeguarding standards to be met. That gives families a clear inspection position, but the detail matters: warm relationships and developing independence sit alongside concerns about the consistency of teaching and the speed of identifying additional needs.
Full-Day, morning, afternoon and School-Day bookings sit alongside term-time options. Parents also receive daily feedback and can follow their child's progress through ClassDojo, the nursery's communication app.
Age and attendance pattern both shape the room structure. Piglets Room cares for children from 6 weeks to 2 years, with a separate area for sleep and routines adapted around home life. This makes rest part of the room's organisation rather than an interruption to its activities.
Pooh Bears serves children aged 2 to 3 through the year, using books, singing, cooking and messy play to develop sharing and emotional understanding. Rabbits serves the same ages during term time, combining turn-taking and feelings work with drums, maracas and access to the garden behind the nursery.
Little Tiggers is for 3-year-olds whose preschool year comes next, with literacy, numeracy and book corners supporting exploration indoors and outside. Big Tiggers serves 3- and 4-year-olds approaching school, using choices about activities and role play to practise expressing opinions and understanding behaviour. Eeyores provides the term-time preschool alternative for 3- and 4-year-olds, with similar preparation through emotional understanding, room decisions and activity corners.
The distinction is useful for families: children of a similar age can follow different attendance calendars. The toddler and preschool offer therefore needs to be considered alongside holiday childcare, rather than age alone.
The EYFS provides the foundation for learning through play, covering communication, physical development and relationships alongside mathematics, literacy, creativity and understanding the world. These are the everyday areas of early education; the nursery's room activities give them concrete form.
In February 2026, babies practised handling tools and explored filling and emptying containers with water and sand. Toddlers used counting songs, while preschool children built robots and compared their sizes and numbers of arms. These examples connect physical exploration and making things with language and early number work.
Water play also involved tubing and funnels, with adults asking questions to encourage children's thinking. Play dough offered another route into using tools and representing ideas. These are useful examples of how familiar materials can support several areas of learning within the same activity.
The limitations deserve equal weight. At the February 2026 visit, some children moved between activities with little adult engagement, and familiar stories were not consistently used to deepen understanding. Some children made uneven progress towards their next learning stage. Staff also sometimes left children out of group participation by failing to encourage them to join, reducing opportunities to build social skills. A planned curriculum needs thoughtful conversations during play to turn activity into sustained learning.
Settling in Piglets includes gradual introductory visits and a home visit, giving the key worker a chance to learn about the child before regular attendance begins. Staff follow home routines where possible. Each baby has an allocated cot or pram and individual bedding, with sleep arrangements discussed with parents.
Sleep checks take place every 10 minutes, are signed and recorded, and are fed back to families. That is a concrete care routine parents can compare with their child's habits. Daily conversations cover what children have done, while ClassDojo provides another way to follow development beyond collection-time feedback.
The nursery employs a SENDCo team and designated safeguarding leads. A Mental Health First Aider is also available, and practitioners discuss feelings with children rather than dismissing distress. These mechanisms give families identifiable roles and routes for raising concerns.
Roos provides small-group sessions supported by children's key persons, with attendance determining the timetable. In the Honey Jar, one space has tables, a story corner and floor play; another includes a dark den and a corner for soft play and sensory activities. Different spaces allow support to be organised around the task and the child's needs.
The Roos Curriculum rotates between communication, cognition, physical and sensory development, and emotional and social wellbeing. Work also follows targets in Individual Learning Plans. Speech and Language Therapists, the Early Years Inclusion Team and the Child Development Centre can arrange appointments at the nursery, connecting specialist input with children's familiar surroundings.
At the February 2026 inspection, Ofsted found that targeted support generally helped children with SEND make typical progress, but leaders needed to identify learning barriers sooner and improve oversight of adult interactions so children were consistently involved and challenged; some staff also lacked a sufficiently detailed understanding of individual children. The support structure is substantial, but families should weigh it alongside those weaknesses in delivery.
An on-site chef prepares home-cooked lunches on weekdays, and the food policy addresses dietary requirements and allergies. Healthy Under 5’s supports work on menus, eating habits and physical development, with a noticeboard outside the Main Office extending that work to parents.
The address is Cliff View Road, Camborne, Cornwall, TR14 8QH. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, with closures for bank holidays and the period between Christmas Day and New Year; general enquiries go to 01209 713119 or nursery@gooseberrybush.org.
Full-Day runs from 8am to 6pm, Morning Session from 8am to 1pm, Afternoon Session from 1pm to 6pm, and School-Day from 9am to 3pm. Rabbits and Eeyores also offer term-time bookings from 9am to 3pm or noon to 3pm. These are different booking choices, rather than simply a single opening window.
A booked session must last at least 3 hours, and changes require two weeks' notice. Charges follow hours attended, with sick days and other days off excluded from invoices. Early attendance or late collection is charged in whole hours, so a small change to collection time can affect the bill.
Invoices arrive by email at month-end, and families have until the 10th to flag errors. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; the fees and sessions page explains the charging arrangements.
Funded childcare is offered during term time, with private hours also available. The funding options include 15-hour arrangements for 2-year-olds from working families or families receiving additional government support, 15 hours for 3- and 4-year-olds, and 30 Hours Free Childcare for working families with children aged 3 and over, subject to eligibility.
Funding cannot be carried into holidays or inset days. Families must complete the EY2c Parent Declaration Form before funding can be used, including the applicable eligibility details and proof of the child's date of birth. Attendance before the completed form is handed in is charged as private childcare.
Paid session fees include snacks and lunch; snacks are also uncharged on funded provision, while nursery-prepared lunches are charged separately for children predominantly receiving funding, with a home-packed lunch alternative depending on age. Piglets is the exception to that alternative because packed lunches are unsuitable for under-2s; funded entitlement does not cover nappies, sun cream or other consumables.
The nursery occupies a site at Rosemellin Community Primary School. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place.
Rosemellin Gooseberry Bush suits families choosing between morning or afternoon sessions, a School-Day booking and Full-Day attendance, with term-time rooms adding another option. The Honey Jar, planned baby sleep arrangements, ClassDojo communication and Roos support give parents tangible features to assess.
The February 2026 position is balanced: Expected standard across the assessed areas, with clear work needed on teaching interactions and timely identification of learning barriers. For families drawn to the room structure and support mechanisms, consistency of teaching and early identification of needs remain central considerations.
At the 3 February 2026 inspection, Ofsted assessed all assessed areas at the Expected standard and found safeguarding standards met. Improvement priorities concerned identifying learning barriers promptly and making adult interactions consistently engaging and challenging.
Piglets Room serves children from 6 weeks to 2 years. Pooh Bears and Rabbits serve 2- to 3-year-olds; Little Tiggers serves 3-year-olds, while Big Tiggers and Eeyores provide preschool care for 3- and 4-year-olds. Rabbits and Eeyores operate during term time.
Roos is small-group developmental support led by the SENDCo team with children's key persons. Sessions take place in the Honey Jar and include work towards Individual Learning Plan targets, with a timetable dependent on children's attendance days.
Yes. Funded childcare operates during term time, with eligibility-dependent arrangements for 2-year-olds and working families alongside funding for 3- and 4-year-olds.
