Two gardens, a courtyard edged with sensory planters and an on-site kitchen give Cherry Tree Nurseries, Binley a practical emphasis on outdoor exploration and everyday care. This Brandon Road nursery in Coventry has capacity for 38 children, with a current age range of six months to five years. Its open-plan layout is an important part of the choice: it supports shared activity, but the organisation of sound and group learning deserves attention.
At its July 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities made good progress through early identification, additional support and specialist referrals. The improvement points were precise: children needed more thinking time before answering questions, and simultaneous singing groups sometimes made it difficult to hear and participate.
Full days, school days, morning and afternoon sessions sit alongside term-time-only contracts and stretched funding. That gives families several ways to organise attendance, rather than a single daily pattern.
Babies, Toddlers and Pre-school are the nursery's three age groups, each with activities adapted to its stage of development. The building is open plan, and a Binley extension has added a new baby room. For families starting with a younger child, that dedicated space is a useful part of the nursery's physical offer.
In July 2024, babies practised moving around low equipment, toddlers used steps and slides, and preschool children tackled climbing apparatus, tricycles and throwing activities. The progression was concrete: increasing physical challenges accompanied children's developing mobility. Books were adapted to the same stages, from shared cuddles and flap books for babies to smaller story groups for toddlers and interactive storytelling for preschool children.
The EYFS brings together children's learning, development and care, including language, physical development and relationships. Here, Birth to 5 matters guides observation, assessment and planning, incorporating feedback from families and professionals into children's next steps. Its practical value is the link between what a child can already do and the experiences planned next, rather than the framework's name alone.
Current toddler practice includes activities built around the week's theme, while baby-room activities use themed tuff trays for exploration and imaginative play. Preschool work includes smaller-group and individual activities, alongside preparation for starting school. These are different emphases within the nursery day, rather than a separate programme of optional classes.
In July 2024, staff combined children's own choices with adult-led activities. Language assessments helped identify where extra attention was needed, followed by individual or small-group work. The limitation concerned the delivery of those conversations: adults sometimes moved on before children had enough time to understand a question and formulate an answer. Waiting matters as much as asking.
Both secure gardens are used every day. The main courtyard also serves as an outdoor eating space, with sensory planters containing herbs, heathers, ivy and grasses. These give children material to explore across the seasons, while herbs can also be picked for the kitchen.
The outdoor offer is therefore more than a break between indoor activities. Movement and exploration have physical space of their own, and the courtyard connects the garden with ordinary routines such as eating. In July 2024, outdoor physical challenges were part of the progression from early walking to climbing and ball skills.
In July 2024, the key-person arrangement gave new children a familiar adult to relate to as they settled. Staff gathered parents' views about learning at home and used them when planning development, with daily conversations and online progress tracking keeping families informed. That connection matters because a child's nursery experiences and home interests can inform the same next steps.
The current team includes leaders for the baby, toddler and preschool stages, alongside a manager and deputy manager. The manager holds a leadership and management qualification, and the deputy has experience across the rooms. This gives the nursery a leadership structure spanning both the setting as a whole and its different age groups.
An area SENCO supports work with children who have SEND, including individual activities linked to support plans. For parents, the useful detail is the mechanism: support can be attached to a child's plan and worked on through individual attention, rather than treated only as a general intention.
Meals are freshly prepared in the nursery's own kitchen, with adjustments for dietary preferences, cultural requirements and allergies. The arrangement allows food preparation to respond to individual needs, although allergy-affected families should discuss the practical handling of their child's requirements.
Preparation for school also features in preschool staff's work, including individual and smaller-group activities. This is preparation for the next stage of learning; the useful emphasis is on the child's developing skills and independence.
The nursery is at Brandon Road, Binley, Coventry, CV3 2JF. Weekday opening hours are 8am to 6pm, and Saturday sessions are also offered. It operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and Christmas.
The booking patterns are explicit: Full Day runs from 8am to 6pm, School Day from 9am to 3pm, Morning Session from 8am to 1pm and Afternoon Session from 1pm to 6pm. Term-time-only contracts, funded-only sessions and stretched funded sessions add different attendance arrangements. Additional private hours can also be purchased.
Enquiries can be made by telephone on 02476 444776 or through the contact form. A separate holiday club serves children aged five to 12, with full-day, school-day and half-day patterns; that older-child provision is separate from the nursery's current early-years age range.
Early Education Funding (EEF) is offered for children aged nine months, two, three and four years, with both term-time and stretched funded arrangements. Paid-session prices include food, nappies, wipes, creams and other consumables; funded sessions carry a separate consumables charge. Families can obtain current prices in a written quotation, with the session structure and charging terms set out on the funding and admissions page.
Booking involves a registration charge and a deposit. The deposit is returned when a child leaves, after at least six months, or credited against the final invoice. Those terms make the length of the intended attendance relevant to the initial financial commitment.
Cherry Tree Nurseries, Binley suits families comparing full days with school-day attendance or morning and afternoon sessions, including those wanting term-time or stretched funded arrangements. Its gardens, sensory planting and on-site cooking give everyday routines tangible substance, while individual SEND activities linked to support plans provide a clear basis for discussing a child's needs.
The July 2024 Good judgement sits alongside specific improvements to conversational pacing and group organisation. For this open-plan nursery, those are useful questions to take into a visit: the setting's strengths are concrete, and so are the points that need scrutiny.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good in July 2024 and judged safeguarding effective. Improvement points concerned giving children more time to answer questions and organising group activities so they could hear and participate.
