Footsteps Binley Nursery & Pre-School

At a Glance

Separate gardens for different ages and a dedicated forest school area give Footsteps Binley Nursery & Pre-School a clear outdoor emphasis. This purpose-built nursery at Binley Business Park in Coventry accepts children from birth to five years, combining space for nature-based experiences with learning planned around each child's interests.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 20 June 2024. The practical attractions are substantial: a main caregiver for each child, meals cooked on site and learning assessments linked to individual next steps. The reservations concern daily routines and coordination with other childcare settings, both raised in June 2024.

Full-day, morning and afternoon bookings serve different family schedules, subject to a minimum weekly commitment.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage shapes the children's learning through play, covering language, movement, relationships and early skills in reading and mathematics alongside creative exploration and understanding their surroundings. Here, planning brings together children's interests, observations of their development and learning shared from home. That gives parents a practical role: what a child enjoys away from nursery can influence what staff plan next.

Each key person sets learning intentions for the children they care for, drawing on assessments and any specialist support plans. Room leaders work together on termly planning rather than treating activities as isolated experiences. Progress is reviewed each term, with WellComm assessments used four times a year to monitor development and identify next steps. The useful detail is the connection between assessment and planning, rather than assessment for its own sake.

In June 2024, a butterfly activity involved children recalling stages of its life cycle and learning names for different butterflies. Adults used questions to draw out what children remembered, then added vocabulary. French learning and dance led by outside organisations also featured at that time. These are dated examples of the children's experiences, rather than promises about today's timetable.

Outdoor and Community Life

Large gardens have separate spaces for different age groups. Babies and older children therefore have outdoor areas organised by age, rather than one shared garden being the only arrangement. A dedicated forest school area adds a place for nature-based experiences alongside the wider gardens.

Children may also take part in sensory movement experiences for babies and creative art activities. The offer is expressed as possible enrichment, so these experiences should not be read as a fixed weekly schedule. The stronger, durable attraction is the physical outdoor space itself.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Every child has a Key Person who serves as their main caregiver and the family's principal contact. Daily updates and play-and-stay sessions connect nursery life with home, giving parents both information and opportunities to take part in learning. The arrangement makes the relationship with one familiar adult central to care.

In June 2024, settling sessions could be adjusted to help children become comfortable with staff before spending time apart from their parents. Children turned to familiar adults for reassurance. For a child starting nursery, that sequence matters: becoming comfortable with a caregiver came before separation.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the June 2024 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and SEND support good, with staff, families and outside agencies working together and the special educational needs coordinator demonstrating strategies for practitioners. Current learning plans also draw on specialist support plans where applicable, linking additional support to the child's planned learning.

School preparation in June 2024 included children helping themselves to snacks, practising personal care and considering how their behaviour affected others. Making choices and solving problems were part of the preparation too. These examples concern everyday independence rather than an admissions advantage.

Meals are cooked fresh on the premises each day, using seasonal ingredients. Their charging arrangements differ between paid and funded hours, so food needs to be considered as part of the childcare budget as well as the daily routine.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is Binley Business Park, off Harry Weston Road, Coventry, CV3 2SN. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, with onsite parking and a buggy store that allows families to leave a pushchair during the day.

Full days run from 8am to 6pm; mornings run from 8am to 1pm, and afternoons from 1pm to 6pm. The minimum booking is either four morning or afternoon sessions or two full days each week, and it must include Monday or Friday. That weekday condition matters as much as the number of sessions when matching childcare to work arrangements.

The nursery opens for 49 weeks, closing for public holidays and a week each in summer and at Christmas. Fees are calculated over 50 weeks and paid monthly in advance. Charges continue for bank holidays, while sickness and holidays do not attract a refund, credit or replacement session.

Permanent session changes and cancellation require one calendar month's notice. A registration charge and a deposit apply, both waived for fully funded places; the deposit is credited against the final invoice. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare includes the 15-hour and 30-hour entitlements, each based on 38 weeks, for children aged nine months to four years, alongside 2 Help funding. The standard arrangement stretches entitlement through the year: the stated weekly allocations are 11.40 or 22.80 funded hours. Families can use funded hours alone or combine them with privately paid time.

Meals, cream and nappy bags are included in non-funded fees; nappies, wipes and suncream are excluded. During funded hours, meals, cream and nappy bags are charged separately through the optional Essentials Package, which also covers enrichment.

Parents can opt out of the Essentials Package by contacting the manager before term starts. Depending on nursery policy, opting out may involve supplying suitable alternatives or taking responsibility for collecting and disposing of consumables. The Enrichment Programme may include gardening, cooking, celebrations and Forest School inspired sessions, rather than guaranteeing every listed activity.

Things to Consider

  • Routines between activities. In June 2024, some children spent too long seated at tables while others drifted around the room. During a visit, ask how staff now organise these periods so children remain occupied and their needs are met.
  • Attendance at another setting. Links with other settings children attended needed strengthening in June 2024. Families sharing care across providers should ask how learning information is exchanged now.
  • Weekly commitment and closures. The minimum booking includes Monday or Friday, with summer and Christmas closures as well as public holidays. Match those conditions to your working week and holiday cover.
  • Funded-hours budget. The Essentials Package is optional, with an opt-out deadline before term. Establish which alternatives would be required for your child and how the 49 opening weeks relate to the 50-week fee calculation before agreeing the booking.

The Verdict

Footsteps Binley suits families choosing full days or morning and afternoon sessions who value separate outdoor spaces, a consistent caregiver and learning connected with home. Its gardens and nature area give the setting character; individual planning and regular assessments give the educational offer substance.

The decision rests on the weekly booking commitment, the funded-hours extras and how routines work now. The June 2024 concerns deserve specific discussion, especially where a child also attends another setting.
