Growing fruit and vegetables, searching for insects and tackling balance beams give Fledglings Thorne a practical, hands-on character. In May 2026, children also practised independence by choosing what to play, getting dressed and serving food at mealtimes.
At its 21 May 2026 inspection, Ofsted judged achievement, behaviour and routines, welfare, inclusion and leadership to be Strong standard, curriculum and teaching to be Expected standard, and safeguarding standards to be met, while identifying inconsistent opportunities to extend children's thinking.
The nursery has 45 places in total and caters for babies and children up to 60 months old.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play and everyday experiences help children develop language, physical skills and independence. In May 2026, the curriculum built on earlier learning as children moved between rooms, with assessment informing changes to activities.
Songs and rhymes introduced mathematical ideas. Staff brought new vocabulary into conversation and used familiar signs to help children communicate. These approaches connected learning with activities children already recognised.
Outdoor experiences in May 2026 included planting seeds, growing produce and investigating wildlife in nature areas. Balance beams and climbing equipment gave children opportunities to practise coordination. The combination put movement and exploration into the same day's learning.
At the May 2026 inspection, Ofsted found that children, including those with SEND and those learning English as an additional language, made substantial progress, with activities adapted to remove barriers and support provided while longer-term arrangements were being organised.
In May 2026, settling arrangements were adjusted around each child and family. Staff gathered information about home routines and individual needs, and children sought familiar adults for comfort. Regular exchanges with parents helped connect care at home with nursery routines.
Support included visual prompts, signs and targeted conversations. Staff worked with families, external agencies and the local authority on children's individual needs. Moves between rooms and preparation for school involved familiar adults working with families and receiving settings, helping preserve continuity during change.

That opening window gives families room to fit childcare around weekday commitments. The Christmas closure needs to be factored into annual care arrangements.
Fledglings Thorne suits families seeking weekday, year-round childcare. In May 2026, outdoor exploration and everyday opportunities to develop independence were features of children's experience. In May 2026, individual settling arrangements and adapted activities sat alongside a clear teaching priority: making interactions consistently stretch children's learning. The distinction matters. Supportive relationships and ambitious conversations both contribute to a child's day.
At the 21 May 2026 inspection, Ofsted judged achievement, behaviour and routines, welfare, inclusion and leadership to be Strong standard. Curriculum and teaching were Expected standard, and safeguarding standards were met. Staff interactions needed greater consistency in extending learning.
