A wooden castle, a mud kitchen and an outdoor classroom give Howley Grange Kindergarten a clear outdoor identity. This Halesowen nursery combines separate stages for babies, younger children and preschool children with termly development reports and practical preparation for school. Its capacity is 49 children, with an accepted age range of 1 to 60 months.
At its April 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. Improvements concerned matching adult-directed activities to different abilities and giving younger children more opportunities to do things for themselves.
Full-day and half-day bookings serve different family routines, with a minimum commitment of one full day or two half days. The nursery opens throughout the year, apart from bank holidays.
The Baby Room supports development at each child's pace through the EYFS, the framework covering early learning and care, including communication, movement and personal development. That gives the room's play a purpose beyond keeping babies occupied. Parents supply nappies, toiletries and spare clothes, keeping familiar care essentials part of the day.
For children aged 2 to 3, the Tweeny Room has a stated maximum of twelve and combines activities organised by adults with opportunities for children to choose and explore, inside and outside. This cap describes the room's maximum, not daily attendance.
Children aged 3 to 4 use the Kindergarten (Kindy) Room, where movement between activities indoors and outdoors supports creative, physical and independent learning. Three key-worker groups give children a closer connection with their key person. School preparation here includes building confidence and everyday independence, rather than simply introducing more formal activities.
The curriculum brings together language, early literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, physical development and creative expression. Dance, music, art, imaginative play and computer activities provide different ways into learning. The EYFS is the shared framework; these activities show how its areas of learning translate into a child's day here.
In April 2022, language work reached beyond story sessions. Staff talked with children while helping with coats, used pictures to explain what would happen next and sang with babies while making eye contact. Older children joined in with repeated story vocabulary. These are useful examples of learning threaded through care and play, rather than confined to a scheduled lesson.
At the same visit, snack routines provided opportunities to count cups and compare quantities and colours. Staff also connected exercise with changes children could notice in their bodies, discussing warmth, muscles and stretching. Everyday experiences became material for conversation and early reasoning.
The limitation was the fit of some adult-directed activities: in April 2022, differences in children's abilities were not consistently reflected in planning, leaving some insufficiently challenged. Activities need to offer each child an appropriate challenge.
The outdoor area includes a garden and mini climbing wall alongside the mud kitchen, wooden castle and outdoor classroom. Trucks, scooters and bikes add opportunities for movement. The mix gives children places for imaginative play as well as physical activity, with outdoor access treated as part of nursery life across the weather.
In April 2022, children practised balancing on beams, moving through tunnels and jumping into hoops. Staff paired movement with language, demonstrating actions while naming them. The physical space therefore supported both coordination and understanding.
Events across the year include Teddy Bears Picnic and Beach Day, while Graduation Day marks the departure of children moving on to school. The BBC Children in Need Appeal is among the charitable initiatives supported. These give families recognisable points in the nursery calendar, alongside celebrations of cultural and religious festivals.
Parents receive a development report each term, with next steps they can support at home. Tablet-based observations help staff record children's progress, and regular parents' evenings are offered for the Tweeny and Kindy stages. Families have several routes to follow their child's learning.
Key workers are the point of contact for questions about development. Information about home life is gathered when children join, and staff exchange information with another setting when a child attends both. For families dividing care between settings, that exchange can help adults work from a more connected picture of the child.
In April 2022, relationships with staff helped children settle, and parents described receiving updates about care, development and future learning. Children also used conversations and pictures of facial expressions to communicate feelings. That gave less confident children another way to make themselves understood.
Support for additional needs includes working with parents and local authority specialists to identify where help is needed. Staff have undertaken Makaton sign language training to support communication.
All staff, including apprentices, are first aid trained. Site access uses an electronic gate, a controlled entrance door and monitored CCTV.
In April 2022, older children had opportunities to serve themselves at lunch, but adults sometimes stepped in before younger children could attempt tasks. Independence was therefore less consistent for the youngest children. Parents who value self-help skills should consider how these opportunities develop as children move between rooms.
Freshly cooked meals arrive daily from a professional caterer, while a dedicated member of staff prepares breakfasts and snacks in the nursery kitchen. The nursery's dietary arrangements allow for allergies and other dietary requirements.
Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across 52 weeks, with bank holidays closed. Full-day and half-day sessions are offered, and bookings have a minimum of one full day or two half days. Sessions are arranged flexibly, subject to availability.
The admissions order favours families seeking full-time care and full days before those seeking half days. A sibling exception applies where an older child's continued attendance depends on the younger sibling obtaining a place. When oversubscribed, the nursery uses a waiting list ordered by application date within those priorities; joining that list requires a registration form and a non-refundable deposit.
The address is Howley Grange Road, Halesowen, B62 0HS. Access is via Frankley Avenue, with B62 0EA given for satnav, so the entrance instructions matter when planning the route.

Funded childcare is offered for children aged 2, 3 and 4. From the term following a child's third birthday, the nursery describes an entitlement of 15 hours a week during term time, with an additional 15 hours subject to circumstances and a parent's own online claim. Private full-day and half-day care sit alongside the funded offer.
Parents provide baby nappies and toiletries. Tweeny families also supply a sleep sheet and beaker and purchase a mealtime apron; Kindy families purchase an apron and leave a drinks bottle at nursery. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Uniform is required for Tweeny and Kindergarten children: a white polo shirt, red jumper or cardigan, and grey trousers or skirt. Spare clothing is needed too, with practical clothes suited to independent dressing and messy outdoor play.
Howley Grange Kindergarten suits families considering either full-day care or half-day attendance who value outdoor play, staged rooms and regular information about development. The Tweeny room cap, preschool key-worker groups and termly reports give those broad qualities useful substance.
The April 2022 judgement provides a positive inspection position, with specific reservations about differentiated activities and younger children's independence. For parents, the strongest fit is the combination of practical care routines, outdoor resources and a clear connection between nursery learning and home.
