Kingsway Childcare

At a Glance

Carrots in a planter, a remembered farm trip and children experimenting with wooden ramps give Kingsway Childcare a practical, hands-on character in its July 2023 account. Based at Kingsway Children's Centre in Goole, it has capacity for 36 children.

At its July 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated Kingsway Childcare Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities helped them progress. Children attending then were aged two to five. Those findings describe that period rather than a current daily offer.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: here, the July 2023 examples included exploring plants, measuring ingredients and sharing stories. Making dough brought measurement and language together as children measured flour and water, kneaded the mixture and discussed how it changed.

In July 2023, a planter gave children something tangible to investigate. They talked about growing carrots and connected a maize plant with a recent farm visit. Wooden blocks and a plank prompted another kind of investigation, with children discussing the slope before sending balls down it.

Reading had a social dimension too. During that same period, children chose a familiar story to retell to friends after hearing staff read it. These examples show how ordinary materials could become opportunities for conversation and experimentation.

Care and Support

In July 2023, home visits helped staff learn about children's interests before they started. Books supported preparation for changes in routine, while a mirror and pictures of emotions helped children talk about feelings. Staff responded gently when children found separation from parents difficult. During that period, the brush bus made toothbrushing after snack part of children's routine.

Parents received materials for mark-making at home during that period. Staff also worked with outside professionals and used additional funding for resources and staffing, giving families several routes through which their child's learning could be supported.

Practical Information

Kingsway Childcare's address is Kingsway Children's Centre, Fountayne Street, Goole, DN14 5HQ.

In July 2023, opening hours were 9am to 4pm on weekdays during term time. At that time, the nursery received early-education funding for children aged two, three and four. These are dated arrangements, useful as background when considering attendance.

Things to Consider

  • Teaching consistency. In July 2023, some activities failed to involve every child, and staff did not reliably establish what children understood. More careful oversight of teaching was an improvement priority.
  • Home languages. In July 2023, familiar words supported care routines, but children needed more chances to use their home languages while playing and learning. This matters for families raising children in more than one language.
  • Attendance planning. The July 2023 timetable followed school terms. At a visit, what attendance arrangements would fit your family's week now?

The Verdict

Kingsway Childcare will appeal to families drawn to practical exploration and links between nursery learning and home. Its July 2023 examples give that appeal substance, while uneven teaching and opportunities for home-language development deserve attention. The dated term-time timetable is most relevant to families considering care around school terms.
