At a Glance

Ladybirds runs on a morning rhythm: nursery starts at 8.40am and ends at 11.40am. This is Kingsway Primary School’s nursery in Goole, with its own classroom and collection point reached through the field path gate. For families planning the day around nursery, that finish time is the decisive practical detail.

The Nursery Day

Talking, exploring and playing together give the early years provision its character. In January 2023, children shared equipment, played cooperatively and treated one another thoughtfully. Learning plans allowed curiosity while helping children develop the language to explain their ideas. That connects social play with learning, rather than treating conversation as a separate task.

Staff checked what children understood and used those checks to decide what to teach next. Spoken language received attention throughout activities, with adults building vocabulary whenever opportunities arose. For a young child, this means learning includes expressing a thought, listening to someone else and finding words for a new experience.

Early reading also begins here. In January 2023, children were developing the basic skills needed for reading through phonics. Phonics consistency. Some staff had yet to complete training in the programme, and teaching varied as a result. Completing that training was the improvement required, a relevant consideration for parents weighing the early reading provision.

Care and Support

The early years environment was happy and safe in January 2023, with children showing consideration during shared play. Alongside those everyday relationships, families can raise learning concerns with the class teacher and then the special educational needs and disabilities coordinator, or SENDCo. This gives parents a clear starting point for discussing support.

SEND support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning help, putting it into practice and reviewing its effect. Termly Support Plans are discussed with parents each term, so families contribute to decisions about their child’s next steps. Help may include individual work or small groups, with teaching adjusted to the child’s needs.

Specialist involvement can include Speech and Language Therapy and the Sensory and Physical Teaching Service. Referrals require parental permission. Across the school, the building is on a single level, wheelchair access is provided and there is an accessible toilet. Children with sensory needs can use sensory equipment and spaces, making these concrete points relevant when considering a child’s access and participation.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application to the local authority where they live, meeting that authority’s application deadline. East Riding of Yorkshire Council is the school’s admission authority; families living outside East Riding apply through their home council.

Transition support is a separate matter from allocation of places. For children with SEND moving between classes, teachers meet to share information and children have sessions in their new classrooms. Individual arrangements can also support phased entry into Reception, helping a child become familiar with the change.

Practical Information

The nursery morning runs from 8.40am to 11.40am, with drop-off and collection at the Nursery Classroom via the field path gate. An afternoon childcare arrangement would need to fit around that nursery finish.

For enquiries, contact the administrative team on 01405 763716 or email kingsway.primary@eastriding.gov.uk. School visits can be arranged by telephone or email when considering an application.
