In January 2023, buttering bread, following recipe cards and helping younger children with their coats illustrated Kiddikins Nursery's emphasis on practical independence. At its January 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Outstanding, finding effective safeguarding, strong progress across learning and highly effective support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
Based at Hartlepool Main Centre (Sure Start North) on Hindpool Close, Hartlepool, TS24 0TB, it has 45 places in total and accepts children aged 2–60 months. The strongest examples from January 2023 concern children doing things for themselves, with adult help adjusted to their stage of development.
In January 2023, the cook led a home economics programme, taking children from spreading butter on bread to making food independently with recipe cards. This put useful everyday skills into their learning. Older children also worked out how to make play dough themselves, giving their ideas a practical outlet.
The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, its breadth was evident in January 2023 through physical play, storytelling and opportunities to practise independence: babies and toddlers received help with movement milestones, while older children led activities.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears supplied the theme for a play tray in January 2023. Story resources gave children something concrete to use when retelling the tale and practising vocabulary. Outdoors, a hill and tunnel brought rolling and crawling into play. Children also practised consideration for others, with older toddlers helping younger children unfasten and put away coats.
At the January 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that daily individual support programmes enabled children with SEND to join the curriculum and routines, while links with healthcare professionals helped families access services and specialist equipment.
In January 2023, staff gathered detailed information from families when children started, connecting support to each child's development and needs. Assessment informed targeted help, including speech and language activities. Staff with additional speech and language training supported teaching across the nursery, and early years pupil premium funding was being used for training in child-appropriate sign language.
School preparation also had a practical shape in January 2023: children developed confidence and self-care skills, and staff accompanied families on transition visits. Familiar adult support extended beyond the nursery itself.
Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Kiddikins operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and two weeks at Christmas. Those closures matter when planning dependable childcare around work.
In January 2023, the nursery received early education funding for children aged two, three and four, alongside early years pupil premium funding. These are different strands: the former supported early education provision, while the latter supported additional help for eligible children's needs.
Kiddikins suits families who value practical independence and support built around an individual child. Its January 2023 examples are persuasive: cooking, self-care, language activities and supported school visits each gave children useful things to practise. The year-round opening pattern adds practical appeal, provided the Christmas closure fits family arrangements.
