An astro-turfed baby area, a gradual move through Penguin Room and Robin Room, and a preschool emphasis on independence give Mes Enfants a recognisable shape. Different stages have different routines. Babies follow an individual rhythm, while older children gain more adult-led activity as they prepare for school.
At its 31 August 2021 inspection, Ofsted rated Mes Enfants Good and found safeguarding effective. That is a dated judgement: the practical offer and the observations from that visit need to be read separately.
The nursery has capacity for 40 children, with a current age range of 2 to 60 months, at 195 Leicester Road, Groby, Leicester, LE6 0DT. Its rooms provide a progression from baby care towards preschool, with visits before the move out of the baby room rather than an abrupt change of surroundings.
Learning through play is central to the daily approach. The strongest practical details are the separate provision for babies outdoors, the gradual introduction of structure and Tapestry, which records children’s development and shares it with parents.
Baby Room combines play and exploration with routines adjusted to individual babies, plus pushchair walks and an astro-turfed area in the garden. That flexibility matters when feeding, rest and readiness to play differ between children.
Penguin Room introduces different play materials and experiences after familiarisation visits from the baby room, with garden play continuing. The move therefore involves getting used to a new room before making it the child’s regular base.
Robin Room adds a morning registration activity and stories, alongside indoor and outdoor play throughout the year, to introduce a more structured routine before preschool. Structure arrives in stages rather than all at once.
Pre-school Room increases adult-led activity and emphasises managing everyday tasks, communicating and getting along with others in preparation for school. These are practical skills: independence and expressing needs matter alongside learning activities.
The EYFS provides the framework for learning, development and care, with children learning through play and a combination of activities chosen by adults and children themselves. For younger children, the emphasis includes language, movement and emotional development; older children also develop mathematical, creative and literacy skills and explore the world around them.
In August 2021, babies practised precise hand movements by fitting pipe cleaners through a colander, while toddlers experimented with which toy dinosaurs would fit inside a play house. These examples show learning through trial, adjustment and persistence rather than simply completing an adult’s task.
In August 2021, children used the garden and vegetable patch to count, compare and investigate. Children examined slugs, discussed their food and connected them with damage to growing courgettes. Planting, watering and harvesting also gave children direct experience of how food grows.
Messy activity at that time included paint, foam and cornflour, alongside drawing and imaginative play. The combination gave children opportunities to experiment with materials and practise the hand movements used later in writing. These are examples from that visit, rather than a timetable of current activities.
A key person system gives each child a consistent relationship within the staff team. Parents contribute information about their child, and individual interests help shape the day. Tapestry provides a way to share achievements and development, giving families something concrete to follow beyond a general account of activities.
At its August 2021 inspection, Ofsted found affectionate relationships between babies and their key people, and planning informed by parental information and observations of children’s development. Those findings connect relationships with learning: knowing a child well helps staff decide what to offer next.
In August 2021, children received help with disagreements over toys, taking turns and managing feelings. Staff also responded to babies’ sounds and modelled pronunciation for older children. However, some adults answered their own questions too quickly, reducing children’s chances to think and contribute their ideas.
The nursery has designated safeguarding lead roles and paediatric first-aid-trained staff. These are practical arrangements, separate from the dated safeguarding judgement above.
In August 2021, children had freshly prepared meals and opportunities for active garden play, but staff did not explain sufficiently how diet and exercise affect health. The improvement priorities concerned both these messages and giving children more room to speak. Good provision therefore came with specific work to do, rather than an unqualified endorsement of every aspect of the day.
Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and one week at Christmas. That calendar is useful for families whose childcare needs continue beyond school terms.
Enquiries can be made by telephone or email. Current prices come in the nursery’s written quotation, and payment is due in advance on the first of each month. Families should factor that payment timing into their childcare budget.
A nursery education grant is offered for eligible children, alongside paid childcare. For funded children once they turn 3, breakfast, lunch and tea carry a separate, voluntary food supplement; families can instead send food from home without paying that supplement. The distinction matters: funded childcare and the nursery’s food provision are separate parts of the arrangement.
Mes Enfants suits families seeking care across the year and a gradual progression from flexible baby routines to more structured preschool activity. The baby garden area, room transitions and Tapestry give parents concrete reasons to consider it. Its August 2021 Good judgement is useful context, with conversation and health education the specific improvement points to explore during a visit.
Ofsted rated it Good at the inspection on 31 August 2021 and found safeguarding effective. Improvement priorities concerned explaining healthy choices and giving children more opportunity to express their ideas.
The current age range is 2 to 60 months, with capacity for 40 children overall. The rooms are Baby Room, Penguin Room, Robin Room and Pre-school Room.
Babies follow flexible routines. Robin Room introduces morning registration and stories, while Pre-school Room adds more adult-led activity and develops independence, communication and social skills. Learning follows the EYFS through play and both adult-led and child-initiated activities.
