Bright Horizons Hull Kingswood Day Nursery and Preschool

At a Glance

A separate sleep room for babies, music through Boogie Mites and a garden with space reserved for younger children give Hull Kingswood a recognisable character. Based inside David Lloyd Leisure Centre on Gibraltar Road, it accepts children from 3 months to 5 years. The practical appeal starts with provision for different stages: rest for babies, exploration for toddlers and more structured preparation for preschool children.

At its April 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding, found safeguarding effective and praised the individual support and progress of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. That judgement belongs to that visit. A later organisational safeguarding notice dated June 2026 is material to a decision now and is explained below.

For everyday planning, opening hours run from 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays, with care across the year subject to holiday and training closures.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Six rooms organise the nursery around children's stages of development. The baby room has a separate sleep room, allowing naps to be accommodated away from the main activity space and helping staff keep close to routines from home. For parents of a young baby, that physical separation is a useful detail.

Toddler rooms encourage exploration and growing independence, with activities planned around each child's interests. In the Rising 3s room, a touchscreen computer and outdoor exploration support children as they become more independent learners. These are different emphases rather than a single activity plan applied to every age.

Learning and Activities

The EYFS framework covers children's learning, development and care: in daily life, this means building communication, physical abilities and social skills through play and everyday experiences. Alongside it sits the group-wide Nurture Approach, which combines creative activities with attention to wellbeing, confidence and essential skills. The practical question is how those intentions translate into a child's own day.

For preschool children, Ready for School gives structure to reading, writing, maths and other skills used when starting school. Weekly yoga adds a different kind of activity. Boogie Mites brings music and songs into learning about the world, giving children another way to join in beyond talking or drawing.

In April 2023, outdoor experimentation included making a volcano and predicting what would happen when mixtures were combined. Staff introduced vocabulary connected with the experiment and developed conversations from children's questions. Elsewhere, play dough flowers prompted discussion about seeds, sunlight and water. These examples connect hands-on play with language and understanding rather than treating each as a separate task.

Outdoor and Community Life

The large garden includes a baby and toddler area, astroturf and shaded spots. Younger children therefore have a designated outdoor space, while shade provides another option within the garden. Mud Kitchen and Water Play are also part of the nursery's outdoor offer, adding opportunities to explore materials through play.

In April 2023, children used giant tyres to construct a pirate ship outdoors. That example captures how a substantial physical resource could become both a building challenge and imaginative play. It is a dated illustration of activity, distinct from the garden arrangements offered now.

Care and Support

Relationships and communication have concrete mechanisms here. The Bright Horizons Family app lets parents follow their child's day and developmental milestones. For a parent spending the working day elsewhere, this provides a way to stay connected with nursery experiences as well as discussing them afterwards.

In April 2023, children had close relationships with their key members of staff, while parents received daily conversations, photographs and online updates. Home learning suggestions included a lending library, extending access to books beyond nursery. The special educational needs coordinator tailored individual support plans, and practitioners worked with speech therapists on strategies and targets. Those mechanisms show what individual support involved at that time.

Everyday independence also featured in April 2023: older children helped prepare tables and served their food, while children chose activities that interested them. Toothbrushing after lunch was accompanied by a song and explanations about keeping teeth clean. Small routines gave children opportunities to practise doing things for themselves and understand why those routines mattered.

However, in its notice dated 22 June 2026, Ofsted reported significant weaknesses in organisational safeguarding leadership, oversight and practice across some Bright Horizons settings and served a Welfare Requirements Notice requiring action by 1 August 2026. The notice concerns organisational arrangements and explicitly does not describe concerns at every individual nursery; it also states that the provider had not demonstrated consistently effective safeguarding across its provision.

The required work covered senior leaders' application of safeguarding procedures, accurate oversight of risks, recording and escalation of concerns, handling allegations against staff, and monitoring training and supervision. The latest published position is that June notice and its required actions. Its scope matters: it should neither be read as a finding that every branch breached requirements nor set aside because this nursery received an Outstanding judgement in 2023.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is David Lloyd Leisure, Gibraltar Road, Kingswood Retail Park, Hull, HU7 3DB. An onsite car park supports journeys by car.

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates across the year, closing for one inset day, bank and public holidays, and the period between Christmas and New Year. Those closures matter for families arranging continuous weekday childcare.

Funded childcare uses ten-hour sessions beginning at the nursery's opening time. Additional attendance outside that funded session is charged separately, and purchasing extra hours is not a condition of accessing a funded place. The distinction is useful when matching the childcare day to work commitments: the opening window and the funded session are separate arrangements.

Enquiries can be made by telephone on 01482 428 405. A personal tour can be booked through the nursery's visit form.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare is offered, subject to eligibility, with the fee arrangements covering both 15 and 30 funded hours. Funding is stretched across 50 weeks rather than delivered solely during term time. Private childcare and additional paid hours are also offered, so a family's total arrangement can combine funded hours with separately paid attendance.

For private care, meals and snacks are included in fees, alongside essentials such as nappies, wipes and sun cream; the listed care inclusions carry an exception for a small number of nurseries. During funded hours, food is charged separately, but that charge is non-mandatory and is not a condition of a funded place; consumables are supplied for those hours. This distinction prevents the private-care inclusions from being mistaken for identical funded-place terms.

Meals are prepared by an onsite chef. The care package includes meals and snacks, with formula for babies under 1 year and milk or dairy-free alternatives for older children.

Payments are made monthly in advance by direct debit, and a registration charge applies. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; the useful comparison is the complete arrangement, including attendance, food and any additional hours, rather than funded hours alone.

Things to Consider

  • Later safeguarding action. The 22 June 2026 organisational notice required action by 1 August 2026. Before joining, ask how the nursery implements the required oversight, escalation and staff supervision arrangements and what official outcome has followed.
  • Funding and the working day. Funded sessions last ten hours and begin when the nursery opens, while the opening window extends to 6pm. Compare the written quotation with your intended attendance, including any additional hours and the non-mandatory food charge.
  • Baby routines and essentials. The separate sleep room is a useful starting point for a tour discussion. Ask how your baby's naps and feeds would be accommodated, and confirm which nappies, wipes and formula are included for your arrangement.

The Verdict

Hull Kingswood suits families seeking care across the year, whether using private childcare or stretched funded sessions with additional paid attendance where needed. Its separate baby sleep space, younger children's garden area, Boogie Mites sessions and structured Ready for School work give parents concrete features to weigh against their child's stage and interests.

The April 2023 judgement is a substantial positive, but the later organisational safeguarding notice changes the decision context. A sensible choice rests on both the nursery's practical fit and a clear understanding of the response to that later action.
