Four age-stage rooms, two outdoor areas and a dedicated sleep room give Banana Moon Day Nursery Mirfield a clear physical structure for the years from babyhood to school. Children can move from sensory exploration towards choosing activities and managing everyday tasks for themselves. For parents, the appeal is practical: provision changes as children become more mobile and independent, while sleep has its own space.
The nursery has capacity for 110 children aged three months to five years. At its 7 July 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good, judged safeguarding effective and found children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) well supported. That dated judgement sits alongside later regulatory action: regulatory findings in November 2024 and July 2025 both recorded changes to supervision procedures.
Full-day and half-day attendance are offered, with an opening window of 7.30am to 6.30pm across 51 weeks of the year.
The four rooms follow Banana Moon’s group-wide age stages, with movement from the youngest room linked to confident mobility rather than a fixed birthday. That distinction matters for a baby who is developing at a different pace from another child of the same age.
Baby Moons starts at three months and continues until children are confidently mobile, with colour, texture and shape explored through sensory play and interaction with adults.
Teenie Moons takes confidently mobile children up to two years, using painting, singing and messy activities in a bright, busy room.
Mini Moons caters for children aged two to three, putting emphasis on choosing activities, following individual interests and developing independence, including support with potty training.
Full Moons covers the preschool stage from three years to school age, combining child-chosen play with learning observed and recorded by a key person.
The EYFS is the required framework for children’s learning, development and care; here, play, observation and children’s interests shape learning opportunities. Alongside it sits the group-wide Banana Moon Early Learning & Development Programme, which uses children’s fascinations to plan teaching and provides open-ended resources for exploration. Its practical addition is a planning approach centred on what interests the child.
The curriculum description links observation and parent communication with planning, giving information from home a role in children's next learning steps.
In July 2022, children practised controlled movements by pouring water and cutting herbs and flowers for pretend potions. Play dough provided another route into learning: comparing gingerbread shapes introduced language about dimensions. Singing and stories were part of daily routines, while children shared counting and weekday names in Spanish and Arabic. Those examples connect physical skills, language and imaginative play rather than treating them as separate exercises.
There was also a weakness in the daily rhythm. In July 2022, younger children sometimes waited too long between activities, including before lunch, losing opportunities for conversation and learning. The improvement needed was more purposeful interaction during those transitions, rather than simply adding more activities.
A secure playground and a natural adventure area provide different outdoor settings. Children go outside daily throughout the year, so outdoor activity is part of the ordinary nursery day rather than an occasional addition. The two areas give physical play a place alongside the indoor rooms.
Indoors, interactive screens introduce short encounters with technology alongside the programme’s open-ended play resources.
Settling is planned around the individual child and family. For babies, parent-attended settling sessions allow routines and particular needs to be discussed, and staff aim to follow the routine used at home. This gives families a way to explain the details that matter before their baby begins attending.
The group’s Parent App shares sleep, snacks, activities, photographs and personalised learning journals that help plan next steps. Families can comment from home and give named relatives access, connecting everyday care with development.
In July 2022, regular development discussions, home-learning ideas and stay-and-play sessions helped parents understand children's activities and progress.
Babies have a dedicated sleep room with subdued lighting and wooden cots. Individual bed linen is washed on site, and monitoring combines CCTV with staff checks; established sleep routines are followed where possible. A separate room gives rest a physical place away from active play, rather than asking a tired baby to sleep within the main activity space.
In July 2022, the SEND coordinator worked with parents, colleagues and outside agencies to organise support. That historical picture should be read alongside the later supervision findings. On 13 November 2024, a regulatory call established a failure to meet a requirement following a staff-to-child ratio notification; risk assessments for movement into and out of the outdoor area were revised and shared with staff. On 4 July 2025, another regulatory call established failures following a further ratio notification; the nursery investigated, revised supervision procedures, briefed staff and used observational checks to test implementation. Both documents recorded corrective action, but the recurrence makes supervision a material consideration.
Fingerprint-controlled access and CCTV are building arrangements, not a substitute for staff supervision. Reception also houses a CardiAid automated external defibrillator through the group-wide Little hearts, bright futures initiative, and a LifeVac anti-choking device through Big moments, bright futures. These are specific pieces of equipment; their presence should be considered separately from how children are supervised day to day.
Food is cooked in the nursery’s own kitchen, with two hot meals each day, snacks and a separate weaning menu for younger babies. The allergy policy provides for individual dietary requirements, while older children are encouraged to serve themselves; in July 2022, however, healthy-eating messages were inconsistent, with some children choosing prawn crackers instead of other lunch foods and an activity using crisps, chocolate and sweets.
The address is 117-123 Knowl Road, Mirfield, WF14 9RJ. Nursery opening hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, with operation across 51 weeks each year and closure on bank holidays.
Full days and half days are attendance options. The recommended pattern is either one full day or two half-days each week; this is a recommendation rather than a compulsory minimum. Families can therefore weigh a shorter attendance pattern alongside full-day care.
Fees remain payable during sickness and holidays, across 51 weeks including bank holidays. Families therefore pay for their attendance pattern even when their child is absent.
For school-age children, the same Knowl Road site also runs before- and after-school care, from 7am to 9am and 3pm to 6.30pm. This is separate from the nursery’s opening window and may be useful to households arranging care for siblings at different stages.
Funded childcare and paid attendance are offered. In July 2022, funded early education covered three- and four-year-olds. Current prices come in the nursery’s written quotation, and the fees page provides an enquiry form and callback route.
Banana Moon Day Nursery Mirfield suits families considering either full-day attendance or a smaller pattern of half-days, with baby care, outdoor play and digital communication among its practical attractions. The separate sleep room and progression through Baby Moons, Teenie Moons, Mini Moons and Full Moons give the provision a clear shape.
The balance is less straightforward on supervision. Corrective action followed both later incidents, yet their recurrence warrants a detailed conversation about everyday procedures. The July 2022 Good judgement is useful context; a decision should also give proper weight to the subsequent events and the attendance terms.
Ofsted rated Banana Moon Day Nursery Mirfield Good on 7 July 2022 and judged safeguarding effective. Later supervision-related regulatory events in November 2024 and July 2025 both recorded corrective action.
