Stepping Stones Day Nursery, Mirfield

At a Glance

A rubber-surfaced outdoor area and waterproof clothing give outdoor play a practical footing at Stepping Stones Day Nursery, Mirfield. Its emphasis on independence is equally concrete: toddlers and preschool children help themselves at mealtimes, with staff support. These are useful details for families who want everyday experiences to do some of the teaching.

The nursery has capacity for 62 children and accepts children aged 3 to 60 months. Care is organised in separate age-group spaces. At its June 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good overall. That judgement belongs to a dated assessment, rather than a description of today's practice.

Valley House on Towngate is the setting's home, in a residential part of Mirfield. The combination of age-group spaces, outdoor provision and an emphasis on children doing things for themselves gives families clear features to weigh alongside the inspection's improvement points.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Baby Room follows each child's individual routine, making familiar care patterns the starting point for settling. Daily diaries connect home and nursery, giving parents a way to share information about their baby's day. For this age group, continuity is the practical attraction: the nursery routine begins with the child.

Toddlers emphasises emerging language, relationships and independence in a bright room where activities respond to children's interests. Preschool develops social and emotional skills for the move towards school. The progression is clear: younger children receive support with early communication, while older children practise the independence and relationships involved in their next step.

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets out children's learning, development and care. Here, it guides the use of outdoor resources, connecting play with learning. It is the educational framework, rather than an extra programme unique to this nursery. Here, the concrete emphasis is on age-appropriate experiences and children's growing ability to make choices.

In June 2022, activities followed children's interests and what they needed to learn next. Water play prompted children to predict whether objects would sink or float, while an imaginative cake-making activity changed direction as children chose ingredients and added coloured powder. These examples show children experimenting with ideas rather than simply completing a fixed task.

The same June 2022 account included children preparing lunch tables and pouring drinks, and toddlers carefully cutting fruit and bread with knives. Conversations about potatoes and raisins connected food with how it grows or changes. Everyday tasks provided opportunities to practise coordination and talk about the world around them.

Outdoor and Community Life

The outdoor area serves the different age groups, with a rubber crumb surface supporting use through the year. Waterproof clothing extends that provision into wet weather. The physical arrangement matters more than a general promise of fresh air: equipment and clothing help outdoor play remain part of the nursery day.

In June 2022, children also walked to a local park, practised road safety and used its climbing and swinging equipment. An unexpected change to the park gates required extra supervision, and the improvement actions included better preparation of outing risk assessments. That is a dated concern about planning, rather than evidence of a current shortfall.

Care and Support

Individual routines and daily diaries make the baby provision especially relevant to families balancing care between home and nursery. Information can travel in both directions, rather than relying solely on a conversation at the end of the day.

At the June 2022 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding, secure relationships with key people and good progress, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Those findings give substance to the Good judgement, while remaining anchored to that assessment.

Communication needed more attention in June 2022. Babies sometimes lost interest during prolonged group activities, and some parents did not understand the developmental assessments shared with them each term. The improvement points were specific: adapt group activities to babies' attention and understanding, and make learning information useful enough for parents to support development at home.

Toddlers and preschool children serve their own food with staff help, and the nursery holds a Gold award from Kirklees Council for healthy food choices. Mealtimes therefore combine eating with opportunities to practise independence.

Collection arrangements require authorised adults, and staff must be told about changes to the usual collection plan. Access is controlled through a single main door, supported by CCTV. These are practical procedures, separate from the dated safeguarding judgement.

Funding and Paid Extras

In June 2022, the nursery provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds. This is a historical participation statement, not a promise about a family's current entitlement or attendance arrangement.

Preschool prepares children for the move to school through activities suited to their development, with an emphasis on independence and social and emotional skills. That preparation concerns the child's next stage; it does not establish an admissions advantage.

Things to Consider

  • Baby group activities. In June 2022, some babies became disengaged during lengthy group activities. During a visit, ask how staff now adapt shared activities to babies' attention and understanding.
  • Useful learning updates. Some parents struggled to interpret the termly assessments in June 2022. Ask to see how a developmental update translates into a practical activity at home.
  • Funding and the care bill. Funded education formed part of the offer in June 2022. Before committing, request a current written quotation covering your intended attendance, funded hours, meals and non-food consumables.

The Verdict

Stepping Stones suits families who value outdoor play, continuity of baby routines and increasing independence as children grow. Its rubber-surfaced outdoor area, waterproof clothing and supported self-service give those priorities practical expression.

The June 2022 Good judgement provides a useful assessment, with clear cautions about babies' group activities and the usefulness of learning updates. Families should give those points weight alongside the current room arrangements and the nursery's weekday opening window.
