Learning and Named Experiences

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the national standards for learning, development and care from birth to five. Staff sang and danced with children, introduced and explained key words, and used those conversations to build vocabulary, including babies’ first words.

Books and independence had a similarly practical role. Children used a lending library to take stories home; babies washed their hands and fed themselves, while older children served meals, put on coats and found their name cards. These are ordinary moments used to build language, confidence and self-care. They also give parents a clear picture of a day built around participation rather than adults doing every task for a child.

Forest Garden Adventures is the stronger current feature. Children investigate bug life, play in snow and explore seasonal changes in the forest garden, so nature becomes something to observe and discuss rather than a once-a-week add-on. Trips into the local community extend that experience beyond the nursery site, although no fixed destinations or frequency are set out.

The dedicated sensory room takes a different route: tactile wall features, soft floor tiles, a sensory pebble and a glowing planetary wall support exploration through touch, sound, light and movement. It gives a child who benefits from a lower-stimulation activity a defined alternative to the outdoor offer.

Relationships were a clear strength. Children had formed strong connections with staff and each other, and stories were used to help them discuss feelings and considerate behaviour. Leaders used assessment and links with other professionals where children could benefit from extra learning help.

Families received daily discussions, online communication and home-learning activity bags at that visit. The branch also includes the Famly app for real-time updates, giving parents a practical channel for day-to-day information.

The inspection also set two improvement points: leaders needed to check more consistently that training and coaching were embedded in practice, and staff needed to adapt routines and activities more reliably to individual children’s needs. It highlighted transition periods where children could wait too long when tired or hungry. These were inspection-time findings, not a statement about today’s practice.

Funding and Paid Extras

The Whiston rate card refers to days using early years funding and lists meals, consumables and activities as separate charges for those days. For private hours, Kids Planet’s group-wide inclusions copy lists freshly prepared meals and snacks, nappies, wipes, formula milk and sun cream. Meals and snacks cater to dietary needs. Families managing an allergy or medical diet should confirm the current meal arrangements and care plan directly before a start date.

• Inspection follow-through. Training follow-through and more responsive adaptation of routines were improvement points in March 2024. Families who prioritise highly individualised care can discuss how these areas are handled now.

• Christmas closure. The nursery is open for 52 weeks but excludes Bank Holidays and Christmas. Families needing childcare during the year-end break will need to plan around that closure.

Kids Planet Whiston will suit families looking for either a full day, a morning session or an afternoon session, with an earlier Early Bird extension for some working patterns.
