Cornflour play for babies, woodland exploration and stories about animal habitats give 79 2 81 Childcare a recognisable character in its January 2023 account. This Leeds nursery has capacity for 30 children, with an age range from birth to five.
At its 27 January 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and recognised good progress from children's individual starting points. The teaching detail matters too: questioning younger children and developing older children's early literacy both needed attention.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care, bringing play and everyday routines into their education. In January 2023, babies investigated cornflour mixtures and shaving foam with their hands, while older children explored seasonal change and hibernation through toy animals and a winter scene.
Outdoor learning had substance. In January 2023, forest school activities involved sensory exploration and imaginative play in the nursery's outdoor space and nearby woods. Park visits offered physical challenges, and library outings introduced children to books beyond the setting.
Chinese New Year also featured in January 2023, with a Chinese zodiac story helping children learn about different beliefs. Independence appeared in small, useful tasks: children attempted their own outdoor clothing and practised washing their hands before eating.
In January 2023, children shared play materials, helped with tidying and celebrated one another's dancing. Staff demonstrated polite language and spoke sensitively when children tried unfamiliar physical challenges. An obstacle course gave children opportunities to balance and remind friends to take care.
Communication extended beyond the nursery day in January 2023. Staff gathered information about children's home experiences, used an app to share progress and invited parents to open days. Mealtime conversations encouraged nutritious choices.
Teaching was less consistent across rooms in January 2023 following a difficult period. Managers used colleagues' observations, video reviews and appraisals to examine practice, with plans to address weaknesses. That matters because a thoughtful activity needs an equally thoughtful adult interaction.
The address is 81 Stonegate Road, Leeds, LS6 4HZ. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures on bank holidays and for one week at Christmas.
In January 2023, the nursery received early-education funding for three- and four-year-olds.
For families seeking year-round childcare with weekday opening hours, 79 2 81 Childcare combines a practical timetable with an encouraging January 2023 picture of sensory play, outdoor exploration and growing independence. Its Good judgement sits alongside specific teaching weaknesses. The most useful visit discussion would connect those findings to the interactions children experience now.
