Mosaic Centre

At a Glance

Books, garden discoveries and determined little builders shaped daily life at Mosaic Centre in June 2023. Children rebuilt a fallen brick tower together and connected a butterfly outdoors with a familiar story. These concrete experiences gave children reasons to talk, persevere and cooperate.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its June 2023 inspection. Mosaic Centre is based at Chapeltown Children's Centre in Leeds, with capacity for 70 children and an age range of 3 to 60 months.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning and care: in June 2023, this involved sharing books, experimenting with drawing tools, developing movement and exploring nature. Babies handled chunky chalk, while older children explained their drawings to staff. Making marks had a purpose.

During that month, adults extended conversations with questions and allowed children time to respond. Babies shared picture books with familiar staff; older children linked The Very Hungry Caterpillar to a butterfly they discovered outside. For families, these examples show how stories and conversation connected with children's experiences.

Outdoor and Community Life

In June 2023, low furniture supported babies practising standing and moving along it, while tricycles, scooters and a climbing frame gave older children opportunities to practise movement. Garden discoveries also prompted investigation: children fed grass to snails and discussed where they sheltered during rain.

A story about Eid introduced discussion of celebrations and differences between cultures. Children also explored traditional clothing. These were opportunities to recognise other children's experiences and talk about their own.

Care and Support

At the June 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and praised support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), including early identification, individual plans developed with parents and other agencies, and adjustments to activities when children needed help.

In June 2023, familiar key people gave babies reassurance and supported children as they explored. Staff learned children's preferences, helping them build relationships from the start. Parents knew their child's key person and felt informed about learning and development, making that relationship a useful connection between home and nursery.

Behaviour needed more consistent adult responses. During June 2023, staff helped children understand feelings and take turns, but sometimes intervened too slowly when behaviour became unwanted. Prompt, consistent boundaries were the improvement priority.

Practical Information

Mosaic Centre's address is Chapeltown Children's Centre, Leopold Street, Leeds, LS7 4AW. Opening hours are 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures for bank holidays, Christmas and training days. That opening window is useful for assessing how nursery care fits around work.

In June 2023, session times ran from 7am to 6pm, and the nursery provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-old children.

Things to Consider

  • Consistent boundaries. In June 2023, responses to unwanted behaviour were sometimes too slow. During a visit, discuss how practitioners now respond consistently to conflicts between children.
  • Attendance across the year. The nursery opens across the year but closes for bank holidays, Christmas and training days. What booking pattern would fit your child's attendance within its 7am to 6pm opening window?

The Verdict

Mosaic Centre merits consideration by families seeking care across the year in Chapeltown. Its June 2023 picture combined familiar adult relationships with books, physical play and garden exploration. The practical fit rests on the opening window and closures; consistency in managing behaviour is the clear point to explore when visiting.
