At a Glance

Language is a defining strength of Hillcrest’s early years provision: adults build vocabulary through conversation, repetition and carefully judged support. This is the school’s own nursery on Cowper Street in Leeds, operating within the school’s registration and including provision for three-year-olds. Children can join once they have turned three.

The May 2026 Ofsted inspection judged early years to be a Strong standard. That judgement covers early years across the school, rather than giving the nursery a separate rating. Its nursery-specific findings describe support tailored to children’s ages, helping them participate in learning and become more confident.

The Nursery Day

Conversation does substantial teaching work here. Adults demonstrate language and return to important words, giving children repeated opportunities to develop their communication. For a young child, that means the exchanges with adults are part of learning, rather than simply instructions between activities. The emphasis also helps children communicate with one another.

Learning follows a deliberately sequenced early years curriculum. Staff understand what children can do when they begin and use that knowledge to build their next steps. Clear expectations and familiar routines help children get started with learning. Together, these features give the day a purposeful structure, with teaching connected to each child’s starting point.

A nursery classroom and the Early Years Outdoor Area provide the physical setting. Indoors and outdoors are both part of the early years environment; the evidence supports those spaces without turning them into a promised timetable of activities. Curriculum updates include a Nursery Curriculum Newsletter, while the school’s curriculum communications connect learning with activities families can try at home.

Care and Support

Adult interaction is a substantial part of the care children receive. In May 2026, early years staff were supporting communication skilfully, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities and those learning English as an additional language. The practical benefit is participation: children develop the language they need to speak with adults and other children.

Knowledge of children’s initial skills is shared across the staff team. Support therefore draws on a collective understanding of each child, alongside routines that make expectations clear. Age-specific nursery support also helps children build confidence and stay involved in learning. These are useful strengths for families seeking an early years setting where communication needs receive close attention.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions; attending nursery should never be treated as securing the next place.
