A separate sleep room for babies, real china for toddlers and a mini bike ramp for preschool children give Sunflowers Neighbourhood Nursery a clear progression through its youngest years. Each age group has its own practical spaces, with outdoor play attached to the room rather than confined to a single shared description of nursery life. The differences matter: rest, toilet training and growing independence each have a place in the layout.
At its 15 November 2021 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and judged support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities and children learning English as an additional language to be effective. That is a dated assessment. Its two improvement priorities concerned the detail families received about their child's day and making group activities meaningful for every child taking part.
Based at Braunstone Leisure Centre in Leicester, Sunflowers has 85 places in total and accepts children from three months to five years. Full-day and half-day bookings provide different ways to use the nursery, with the shorter sessions divided between morning and afternoon.
Seedlings Baby Room, for children aged zero to two, combines sensory exploration and child-led choices with a separate sleep room containing cots, mattresses and baskets for individual bedding and comfort items, its own changing space and a garden equipped for this age group.
Sprouts Toddler Room, for ages two to three, uses natural materials and objects from everyday life to encourage exploration, with china and cutlery in its dining space, a bathroom supporting toilet training and open access to outdoor play.
Flowers Pre-School Room, for ages three to five, mixes routines with activities children choose themselves, supported by creative stations, construction resources, sand and water play, a bathroom for increasing independence and a garden with planting space, climbing frames and a mini bike ramp.
These are useful differences for families comparing the next stage of care. The baby provision gives sleep a separate space; toddlers can practise everyday tasks with the equipment they will use beyond nursery; older children have opportunities to make choices alongside following a routine. The room descriptions put practical independence alongside play.
The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care: in everyday terms, play and interaction support communication, physical skills and growing independence. Sunflowers' child-led activities sit within that framework, rather than replacing it with a separate branded curriculum.
In November 2021, children's interests shaped activities. An old clock prompted preschool children to explore numbers, while counting continued outdoors through ball play. Two-year-olds used herbs in play dough and practised cutting leaves with scissors under supervision. These examples connect learning to objects children can handle and questions they already want to pursue.
Group participation needed more attention in November 2021. During a story, some children could not see the illustrations and lost interest, reducing what they gained from the activity. The issue was practical as well as educational: sharing a book only works as a group experience if everyone can follow it.
Outdoor provision changes with the children. Seedlings has an age-appropriate garden; Sprouts can move into its outdoor area; Flowers has equipment for climbing and riding as well as gardening. For parents weighing the indoor layout, those outdoor differences deserve equal attention.
In November 2021, planting also extended children's experience of nature. Staff helped children dig and look after plants, using what they knew about children's experiences at home to broaden their activities. Gardening offered something to care for over time, alongside the more immediate physical play.
In November 2021, babies received comfort through close contact with staff, alongside singing and conversation. Older children were encouraged to explain their feelings and listen to each other when disagreements arose. Care and independence were connected: adults offered reassurance while helping children begin to manage choices and relationships themselves.
Famly is the nursery's communication app, bringing photographs, updates and messages together with observations and learning journals. It gives parents a direct way to exchange information with staff and follow their child's development. The value lies in the content shared, as much as the technology.
That distinction matters because, in November 2021, some families received too little detail about daily activities to discuss them with their child afterwards. Consistency of feedback was an explicit improvement priority. Famly now provides a channel for that communication, but the existence of an app alone does not establish that the earlier concern has been addressed.
In November 2021, picture cards and Makaton signing were used to help children communicate with adults and other children. Staff also worked with professionals involved in children's care, and additional funding supported one-to-one provision. These are concrete mechanisms for adapting communication and support, rather than a general promise about inclusion.
The current baby-room layout makes rest a practical consideration: sleeping children have a separate room, and personal bedding and comfort items have individual storage. Families choosing their baby's first nursery can therefore assess sleep arrangements alongside the play space, rather than treating rest as an afterthought.
By 11 March 2024, the provider had taken action to address non-compliance and improved staff supervision, training and support. On 2 March 2026, non-compliance was found again, requiring action on staff deployment to supervise children safely and on managing risks to staff and children. An appropriate response to the 2026 actions was received, and the provider remained registered. The March 2026 actions make supervision and risk management important considerations for families.
Sunflowers is at Braunstone Leisure Centre, 2 Hamelin Road, Leicester, LE3 1JN. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with bank holidays and one week at Christmas excluded.
Bookings include a full day or a half day, with half-day sessions running from 8am to 1pm or from 1pm to 6pm. Early starts and additional hours are also offered. The opening window and the half-day timetable serve different purposes: the former describes when the nursery operates, while the latter defines the shorter bookings.
Enquiries and taster-session bookings can be made by telephone or email through the contact route. The taster session is free, giving families a specific way to explore the setting before committing to attendance.
Funded childcare is offered for two-, three- and four-year-olds, alongside privately paid bookings. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; the times and prices page separates attendance charges from food.
Meals are cooked on site, and lunch, tea and snacks are charged separately. Families comparing booking patterns should consider those food charges alongside the hours they choose.
Sunflowers suits families seeking either full-day attendance or a morning or afternoon half day, with room layouts that change meaningfully as children grow. The separate baby sleep space, toddler dining arrangements and preschool garden give parents concrete features to assess.
The March 2026 actions on supervision and risk management are a material consideration for families. Families who value practical independence, outdoor play and an app-based connection with staff should weigh those features alongside the later regulatory findings.
