A private garden for babies, music through Boogie Mites and a preschool programme centred on preparation for school give Eldonians a recognisable character. This Burlington Street nursery in Vauxhall, Liverpool, accepts children from 3 months to 5 years and has 60 places in total. Separate garden spaces let outdoor experiences develop alongside children’s changing interests and abilities.
At its 4 October 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding, judged safeguarding effective and found that children with special educational needs and disabilities received strong support from the outset. That is a dated judgement. Later organisational safeguarding action against Bright Horizons also matters to the decision, and is explained below.
The baby room combines natural light and sensory experiences with a milk kitchen, changing area and private baby garden; home routines guide care for the youngest children. These are useful practical features for families making the transition from care at home.
Activities in the toddler room follow children’s interests, while direct access to its own garden gives them opportunities to move between indoor and outdoor play. Preschool brings early literacy together with everyday independence, including serving food and learning how to build friendships.
In October 2022, babies explored shells through sound and touch, two-year-olds experimented with filling containers, and preschool children investigated colour mixing. These examples show the different demands made on children at different stages, rather than a single activity adapted only by age.
EYFS provides the framework for children’s learning, development and care, with play and everyday experiences supporting communication, physical skills and social development. Alongside it sits the group-wide Nurture Approach, which brings wellbeing together with activities intended to develop confidence and practical abilities. The framework and the branded approach have different roles: the former sets requirements, while the latter shapes how learning and care are organised.
Ready for School is the group-wide programme for older children, covering early literacy, mathematics and other preparation for their next stage. Boogie Mites adds music and song as a way of exploring the world. These give families concrete examples of what sits alongside ordinary nursery play.
During October 2022, language activities progressed from babies copying sounds to older children discussing experiments. Staff introduced vocabulary and encouraged children to explain their thinking. Bottle tops, containers and painting equipment became resources for practising coordination, investigation and problem-solving.
Age-appropriate gardens connect directly with the classrooms. A planting area and mud kitchen provide opportunities for growing and exploratory play, giving outdoor time a purpose beyond simply taking a break indoors.
In October 2022, family photo books supported conversations about children’s home lives, celebrations and food. Familiar family experiences became a starting point for understanding differences between people.
Babies’ routines from home are followed as closely as possible, making continuity a practical part of care. The Bright Horizons Family app lets parents follow daily experiences and developmental milestones. It offers a connection with nursery life beyond the conversation at collection.
In October 2022, a lending library and activities to take home connected learning with family routines. Mathematics could be explored during bath time, while supermarket activities introduced money. The practical value was their fit with things families were already doing, rather than adding a separate lesson at home.
In October 2022, the special educational needs and disabilities coordinator put care and learning strategies in place while children awaited outside professional involvement. Additional funding supported this work. For families with a child needing extra help, the important mechanism was support beginning before specialist input arrived.
Independence also featured in everyday care during October 2022. Babies practised feeding themselves and fastening bibs; older children cleaned painting equipment and dealt with spillages. These were small responsibilities with a clear connection to managing themselves and sharing a space with others, including preparation for school.
In a compliance outcome dated 22 June 2026, Ofsted recorded a Welfare Requirements Notice requiring Bright Horizons to strengthen organisational safeguarding leadership, oversight, responses to concerns, management of allegations and staff training by 1 August 2026. The notice concerned organisational arrangements and did not identify concerns at every individual nursery; the majority of settings continued to meet requirements, but the organisation had not demonstrated consistently effective safeguarding across its provision. This is the latest published position, rather than a finding that Eldonians itself breached those requirements.
The address is Eldonians, Burlington Street, Vauxhall, Liverpool, L3 6LG. Opening hours run from 7am to 6pm on weekdays. Care operates across the year, with closures for bank and public holidays, one inset day and the period between Christmas and New Year. Families needing cover throughout the working year should include those closures in their plans.
Private childcare is priced by days attended each week. Funded childcare uses 10-hour sessions beginning at opening time; attendance beyond that session is charged separately. Buying extra hours is not a condition of taking a funded place. A personal tour can be booked through the nursery’s visit form, and telephone enquiries go directly to the setting on 0151 556 1231.
Onsite parking supports journeys by car, and Lime Street station is nearby. The nursery also provides a buggy park, a useful detail for families travelling with a pushchair.
Funded childcare is offered, with arrangements for 15 and 30 funded hours stretched over 50 weeks rather than delivered solely during term time. Eligibility conditions apply. Additional private hours and food charges are separate from the funded entitlement, so a funded booking and its total bill are different things.
An onsite chef prepares meals, and private fees include food, snacks, nappies, wipes, formula and sun cream. For funded attendance, food carries a separate, non-mandatory charge that is not a condition of accessing the place; consumables associated with funded hours are supplied by Bright Horizons.
A registration charge applies, and payment is collected monthly by direct debit in advance. Current prices come in the nursery’s written quotation. The useful distinction for budgeting is between childcare hours, food and the everyday items supplied with care.
Eldonians suits families seeking year-round private childcare booked by days of attendance, as well as those considering stretched funded sessions. Its baby facilities, garden access and named learning programmes give the current offer substance, while the October 2022 judgement provides strong historical inspection credit. The June 2026 organisational safeguarding action is a material consideration and deserves a clear discussion before families commit.
Ofsted rated Eldonians Outstanding on 4 October 2022. A later compliance outcome dated 22 June 2026 concerned organisational safeguarding arrangements across Bright Horizons and required action by 1 August 2026; it did not identify concerns at every individual setting.
