Nursery at The Trinity Catholic Academy

Play, practical making and targeted language support give Trinity’s nursery its character. This is the nursery within The Trinity Catholic Academy, a Catholic primary school on Titchfield Street in Vauxhall, Liverpool. It forms part of the school’s early years provision, so the focus is on the beginnings of learning rather than the older pupils’ school day.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 March 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines adult-led learning with learning through play. Its seven areas connect children’s speech and understanding, friendships and feelings, movement, early reading and writing, mathematical thinking, exploration of the world and creative expression. For parents, this means learning extends beyond letters and numbers: communicating an idea or exploring a material also has a place.
Practical activities make that approach tangible. Children in EYFS build for a purpose, choose materials for their creations and experiment with simple tools. Cooking and preparing food include attention to hygiene. Some activities begin with an adult’s direction; others start with a child’s idea. This gives children opportunities both to follow guidance and to make decisions about what they create.
Read Write Inc is the phonics programme used across EYFS. It introduces sounds and how they combine into words. Exploration of seasons, weather and nearby buildings also contributes to early learning about the world, connecting classroom ideas to children’s surroundings.
Language support has named programmes behind it. Wellcomm sits alongside individual speech and language targets delivered during the week. Many support staff working in the nursery are qualified to deliver targeted speech and language interventions. MAST speech therapy also supports EYFS for a specified number of weeks each academic year, rather than throughout the year.
Beautiful New Beginnings works with early years children on recognising emotions, expressing feelings and managing themselves during transitions. These are useful skills for a child learning to cope with change. Across the school, a lift between floors and automatic entrance doors provide concrete accessibility features.
For children receiving SEND support, teachers and the special educational needs coordinator involve parents in planning and reviewing provision. Pupil Centred Profile reviews take place termly, giving families a recurring opportunity to discuss targets and progress. Class Dojo shares learning updates and reminders, while Arbor carries school messages.
Daily fruit and milk for Foundation Stage children are part of the food routine. Children are also encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle.
A separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no priority under the arrangements for September 2027 entry. Families must apply through their home local authority using its Common Application Form by 15 January 2027. Treat that application as a separate task, even while your child attends Trinity’s nursery.
Families seeking consideration under faith criteria 2 to 6 should also return the Supplementary Information Form, with supporting documentation, to the school office by the same date. For children with Education, Health and Care plans, plans are reviewed ahead of changes between education phases so that support can be prepared. This planning is separate from the allocation of places.
Nursery applications use a form obtained from the school office, completed and returned directly to the school. For enquiries, telephone 0151 298 2917 or email office@thetrinity.sjcmat.co.uk. Contact the school for current nursery charges.
EYFS uniform includes purple jogging trousers and a purple sweatshirt, which can be worn with or without the school logo. A separate PE kit is not required for EYFS, reducing the clothing families need to organise.
