Bumbles Orrell Park

At a Glance

A walled Nature garden and an indoor Garden Room give Bumbles Orrell Park two quite different settings for play: bug hunting and den building outdoors, quieter moments and a Soft Play Area inside. These are useful contrasts for young children whose energy and interests change through the day. The nursery occupies a large detached building at 49 Orrell Lane, Liverpool, L9 8BX, with space organised for babies, toddlers and preschool children.

There are 60 places in total, for children from birth to five. At its October 2021 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective. That is a dated assessment, rather than a description of every aspect of today's provision.

Full-day and half-day bookings sit alongside morning and afternoon patterns. The physical setting is the strongest current detail here; the older assessment adds a more revealing account of children's independence, relationships and learning, including two areas requiring attention.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The Baby room has a dedicated milk kitchen and changing room, keeping feeding and personal care facilities attached to the youngest children's space. Honey Bees, the toddler room, has large windows, toilets and its own changing area. In the Bizzy Bee preschool, separate spaces support building, imaginative play and painting, giving older children different ways to explore an idea.

Beyond those rooms, the Garden Room accommodates both quieter play and the Soft Play Area. This indoor provision matters alongside the outdoor garden: children have spaces for active movement as well as somewhere to pause. The nursery aims to preserve the building's historical character.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care. In everyday terms, it brings communication, movement, relationships and early learning together, rather than treating education as a separate lesson added to childcare.

In October 2021, activities followed children's interests. Babies practised movement with a large ball, tricycles and soft blocks, while toddlers worked with sand and paint rollers. These examples show the different kinds of physical practice involved: whole-body movement for the youngest children and more precise hand movements as children grew.

Language and books also featured in October 2021. Younger children joined songs and stories, with opportunities to make sounds; older children drew, experimented with letter shapes and talked about their pictures. Books introduced lives and experiences beyond children's own. At present, phonics learning with a teacher is also part of the Orrell Park offer.

The older assessment carries an important qualification. In October 2021, adults sometimes moved preschool children to another activity just as they were becoming absorbed. Protecting sustained play was an improvement priority. So was helping newer and temporary staff use their knowledge of individual children more effectively when supporting learning.

Outdoor and Community Life

The Nature garden is enclosed by walls and supports storytelling, den making and searching for insects. Alongside the nursery garden, it provides a concrete setting for exploring living things and turning natural discoveries into conversation and play. The emphasis is on what children can do there, rather than simply having outdoor space.

In October 2021, older children helped make decisions about food and where recycling bins should be positioned. Helper responsibilities gave them a practical role in nursery life. Choosing and taking responsibility were part of the day, alongside adult-led activities.

Care and Support

Relationships were central to the October 2021 account: children had close connections with their key person, and staff allowed extra settling time when children needed emotional support. That flexibility also applied as children moved through the nursery. For a family concerned about separation, the relevant detail is the adjustment to the child, rather than a fixed expectation that everyone settles at the same pace.

At the October 2021 inspection, Ofsted found that the special educational needs coordinator helped staff recognise children needing additional support and arranged prompt referrals to other professionals. This describes a mechanism for identifying needs and seeking help, rather than promising the same response or outcome for every child.

Self-care was practised in small steps in October 2021. Babies were encouraged to locate shoes and help with coats, toddlers used toilets within their play space, and preschool children served food and poured water. These were opportunities to take part in ordinary care routines, with increasing responsibility as children developed.

Health habits also had a place in October 2021: yoga happened daily and toothbrushing was supervised. Children discussed breathing and how their bodies felt during movement. Staff also gave families ideas for supporting learning at home, connecting nursery experiences with what happened beyond the setting.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Bumbles Orrell Park opens Monday to Friday, from 8am to 6pm, across the year, with bank holidays closed. Its booking choices include full days, half days, mornings and afternoons. That gives families different attendance patterns to consider within the opening window.

The enquiry form lets families select Orrell Park and give a preferred starting date, days and attendance pattern. This makes the initial enquiry specific to the childcare arrangement being sought, rather than simply requesting general information.

Getting There

The address is 49 Orrell Lane, Liverpool, L9 8BX. A drive-on, drive-off car park serves the nursery, and there is an outdoor pram store, giving both driving and walking families a practical place to manage collection and belongings.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare and privately paid care are offered. The funding terms describe up to 30 hours per week for 38 weeks, subject to eligibility, beginning in the term after a child reaches nine months; the entitlement is stretched across 51 weeks rather than delivered only during term time.

Taking the full 30 hours requires at least two days; between five and ten funded hours can be claimed per day, within 8am to 6pm. These conditions matter when matching funding to a working week: entitlement hours and the attendance pattern are separate decisions.

For funded sessions, food and non-food consumables attract a separate discretionary additional-services and consumables charge. Meals, snacks and sun cream are among the items covered; the private fee structure includes the additional-services and consumables charge. Families get current prices in the nursery's written quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Preschool concentration. In October 2021, children were sometimes moved on before they could become deeply absorbed in play. During a visit, ask how Bizzy Bee activities now allow children to continue an idea at their own pace.
  • Consistency between staff. The October 2021 improvement priorities included helping newer and temporary staff understand individual learning needs. Ask how information about your child reaches everyone caring for them.
  • Funding pattern and extras. Stretched funding comes with daily booking conditions and a discretionary charge for additional services and consumables. Consider the whole attendance arrangement and written quotation together.

The Verdict

Bumbles Orrell Park suits families considering full-day care as well as those seeking half-day, morning or afternoon attendance. Its walled Nature garden, indoor Garden Room and separate care facilities give the choice a clear physical character.

The October 2021 assessment adds useful substance: children practised independence, formed close relationships and took part in nursery decisions. Its concerns about interrupted preschool play and consistency among newer staff deserve equal weight. For parents, the strongest case is the combination of varied play spaces and different booking patterns, assessed alongside those specific questions about day-to-day practice.
