The important qualification is that older children had fewer consistent opportunities than younger children to build core strength and control of their larger muscles. Staff therefore need to make those opportunities consistent across the age range, not only offer daily access to physical play.

The key-person system is central to care, backed by close work with parents and other professionals. Picture-based schedules made the day's sequence clearer, particularly for children needing additional support. Practitioners also coordinated with external specialists so additional-needs support carried across settings. That combination offers continuity and makes routines more understandable, especially for a child who benefits from knowing the sequence of the day.

Mealtimes were calm and organised. Younger children practised using cutlery, alongside healthy eating and hygiene routines.
