Outstanding practice at the September 2025 inspection was built around a calm, inclusive sessional pre-school where children’s interests shaped play and support was carefully adapted for individual needs. Saint Chad's Anglican Pre-School is based in Church Hall on Eric Road in Chadwell Heath, Romford, and has capacity for 53 children. Children aged two to three attended at the September 2025 inspection. The observations below describe the setting at that visit.

Learning and Everyday Experience

The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, sets the standards for learning, development and care from birth to five. In a nursery day, that means progress is built through purposeful play, talk, routines and activities rather than a school-style timetable.

In September 2025, a spacious hall was organised around engaging choices, including children using magnets to find differently shaped keys hidden in sand. Staff planned from children’s interests and next steps, then adjusted activities to give each child appropriate challenge. Older children were encouraged to use a book’s front cover to think about its story before it began.

Golden rules made expectations clear, with visual timetables and consistent routines helping children understand boundaries and manage feelings. The outside area was available throughout the session. A sensory room gave children with sensory needs a quiet place to work towards individual goals, while balancing equipment supported core strength and coordination.

In September 2025, practitioners knew their key children well and monitored progress closely, using visual cards to help children communicate needs and feelings. The inspection found that staff identified gaps quickly and used consistent strategies to include children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

Language was woven through play. Staff narrated children’s activity, used songs and rhymes, and repeated key vocabulary for children with communication needs and those learning English as an additional language. That combination gave children repeated chances to hear, understand and use language in context.

Family support also had a practical shape at the visit: newsletters included home-learning ideas and information about local services for families needing help. The September 2025 safeguarding judgement was effective, with a positive culture that put children’s interests first.
