In August 2023, staff used clear boundaries, positive modelling, timers and visual reminders to help children understand routines. They encouraged children to discuss feelings and taught healthy eating and dental care. Families told inspectors that updates about their children’s learning worked well. Separately, staff kept in touch with the schools children were due to join.

Safeguarding was effective at that inspection. Practitioners knew how to identify and escalate concerns, while regular risk assessments supported the setting’s safeguards. Assessment also covered children with special educational needs and disabilities, allowing next steps to inform planning. Emotional development was handled explicitly too, with staff helping children talk about feelings rather than expecting them simply to manage.

Relationships between children were a visible strength. Older and younger children learned cooperatively, with staff sharing their success. The example showed peer learning and patience without turning adult direction into the centre of the activity. Clear boundaries sat alongside that freedom. Timers and visual reminders made routines easier to anticipate, giving children practical cues rather than relying on repeated verbal instruction alone. This matters in a setting spanning babies to preschool age, where children will understand explanations differently. Discussion of feelings added another route into self-regulation, while healthy-eating and dental-care teaching connected personal development to everyday choices that children could recognise and practise.
