The Ark Day Care Nursery, Dagenham

The curriculum seen in February 2024 was ambitious and shaped around priorities for each child. Staff combined their observations and assessments with information from parents to identify what children should learn next. The Early Years Foundation Stage means children develop communication, physical skills, relationships and early academic knowledge through play, routines, conversation and adult-led activity. Small-group time with each child's key person gave learning a personal scale, while children needing more help received one-to-one support. Staff introduced vocabulary through songs and discussion. Outdoors, children climbed, rode bicycles and joined movement games, linking physical exercise with lessons about health and safe play.

There was an important qualification. Group teaching was not consistently adjusted for different needs and abilities, including during story time. Staff also needed to use established visual and communication systems more consistently, so children learning English as an additional language and those with communication difficulties could anticipate transitions. For a child who depends on visual cues, the present transition practice is an important point to explore in person.

Relationships are a clear strength. In February 2024, inspection evidence showed that familiar staff gave children secure relationships and confidence in the setting. Daily conversations and regular meetings created two-way communication with parents, while the key-person structure helped staff connect home information with nursery priorities.

The SENCO worked with parents and other professionals to support children with special educational needs and disabilities. This matters because support was coordinated rather than isolated within the nursery, connecting family knowledge, professional input and the priorities staff used with the child. Children also learned about dental care, food, exercise and safe play. Staff received regular supervision, feedback and professional development, and leadership had strengthened teaching with support from the local authority early years team.
